The Rampart Range trail system is a huge network of multi-use trails just West of Sadalia, CO. On the weekends these trails a full of ... more »motocross riders, but on the weekdays they make for some excellent mountain biking trails.
I do not recommend riding this trail on a mountain bike on the weekend due to high motocross traffic. I rode on a Tuesday morning and only encountered one rider up near Rampart Range Rd. Otherwise the trails were empty.
This trail is one of many possible loops. I chose this route because it looked pretty rideable (not too much climbing) and was a reasonable distance. For more ambitious riders, there are over 100 miles of trail in the system (see PDF map under "Other Resources").
This loop can be accessed from Rampart Range Rd. or from Jackson Creek Rd (I did the latter). Any mapping program will get you there easily.
Follow the directions outlined in the POIs bellow. There are a lot of trail intersections, but the route is fairly easy to follow, especially if done with GPS. The important trail numbers are 788, 682, 690, & 681. There are sections of the trail that have no cell phone coverage, so you will need offline access.
There is not much technical difficulty to this loop, more just gravely cross country style trails. The gravel can be problematic when climbing at times, but it won't slow you down too much. Overall a great workout, beautiful forested scenery, and wide open trails.
