I've stayed in hostels that are cleaner.... in Latin America.

Upon entering, we were completely upset with the condition and how much we were being charged. Don't be fooled by the photos on-line. Our room reeked of cat urine, there were what we assumed were ant traps all over, stains and ants all over the bed and the carpet was due for a changing 5 years ago. The bathroom was gross and, although it had a whirlpool tub, we didn't dare use it. In fact, I didn't even want to get under the sheets. It was somewhat cute (though tacky) and close to everything and we were willing to overlook a few things. That was until I saw the first cockroach. I smashed it and hoped I wouldn't find another. Unfortunetly, there were many more. We saw one nearly 2-3 inches long scurry across the carpet and into the closet.
