The place is run by a great guy who takes the time to make you sure have great meals and cultural experience. My friend was a vegetarian and I was gluten-sensitive. There was no problem in modifying the meals, such as rice four tempura (yum!). Each evening, he teaches the guests a traditional Japanese folk song and dance around a... More

Really enjoying our stay, feel like back in time and learning about ryokan! Quite an experience that you don't want miss. Dinner and breakfast come with room and it is so good, all prepare by the owner, his wife and the grandmother. It is a family own place for several generations. After dinner we even learned to sing and dance... More

Our stay at Tajimaya had surpassed our expectations. This is first time I've ever stayed at a traditional Japanese inn (150 years old!) and I was a little skeptical because the photos on their website looked too good to be true. But it was genuinely a very well preserved old Japanese inn that has service to match. We were served... More

We traveled by train from Akame to Nakatsugawa and then onwards by bus to Magome. It felt like we had earned our arrival in this ancient post town. We walked up the hill past the masugata, inns, confectioners and souvenir shops and found the minshuku Tajimaya on the left-hand side. After we have been shown our rooms - as we... More

We stayed at Tajimaya, Magome-juku as part of honeymoon. The hike from Magome to Tsumago will probably be the highlight of our trip. Both towns are so quaint and although very touristy are still charming. The owners were welcoming and both evening meal and breakfast were made with local produce and good quality. Our room was very small compared to... More

We arrived mid afternoon at Nagiso station left our luggage in a locker across the road from the station and just had a couple of small daypacks with change of clothes, night attire and toiletries. As there were four of us we opted to get a taxi as it would have cost about the same to catch the bus. We... More

I stayed in the this place for one night. The room was spotless, the bathroom looked like a mini onsen, food was great and the owner is very passionate about the local culture. Prepare yourself to dancing at night in wooden thongs :).

I stayed in this ryokan for 1 night during my hike of the Nakasendo Road, coming from Ochiai. It is situated in the middle of the village on the steep main road but luckily I had only a small backpack. My room was on the (Japanese) 2nd floor, 6 tatami. There was the usual tea and a cookie in the... More

One of the cheaper place if you are planning to hike between Magome-Tsumago. The location is in the center part of Magome main stone walkway, about 15min walk from bus station. The building is distinctive by the entrance cloth and cartwheel. We were given good advise on where to get the best buckwheat noodle. The building has many staircases towards... More

A lovely traditional hotel with a wonderful typically Japanese dinner, breakfast and bath! Cosy room, in a very quiet village (specially when all shops close). Perfect location for the Nakasendo trekking to Tsumago. Bring light luggage as access to the hotel is via a veeeery steep path and you really regret carrying a heavy case with you.
