Won 2 nights at this hotel, has recently had a refit & is now very smart. The room we stayed in had a jacuzzi bath, but sadly no shower. The food was amazing, make sure you have the full English breakfast - the homemade black pudding & oatcakes are to 'die for!' The hotel is in an excellent location for... more

Wow, how this place has changed! I first visited The Maynard around two years ago and the overall experience was ok. Pleasant but nothing more than that. Because the hotel is a convenient stop off for business trips, I found myself booking in again recently because of the lack of alternative hotel accommodation in the area. The transformation of The... more

The Maynard is no longer called The Maynard Arms apparently, it is now simply 'The Maynard', as it is less of a country pub and more of an upmarket boutique hotel and restaurant! I was speaking to the owner Paul and he explained that they have spent a lot of money refurbishing the hotel over the past few months. You... more

I have dined many times and also satayed at the Maynard on two occasions once at Christmas last year and again recently in the newly refurbished rooms. I though that it would be difficult to match my stay the first time however after spending an evening in the restaurant then staying in one of the refurbished rooms I was once... more

Recently refurbished, this place now looks like a boutique hotel. However, it does not have the snobby attitude to match. It is a beautiful setting with fantastic rooms. We got married there and the staff could not do enough for us. We have eaten there several times and even when catering for a large number of people the food was... more

Terrible experience. Booked dinner, bed and breakfast for two nights and had booking confirmed three weeks before travelling. Travelled from Brighton. Missed call to my mobile about an hour before we were due to arrived - suspected it was checking time for our dinner reservation - so carried on. Arrived to be ignored in reception as staff were showing a... more

All looked set until 2 weeks before we were due to arrive,my wife recieved a telephone call from the hotel... more

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night as a romantic break and to sightsee in the area. I had booked a deluxe suite by phone with dinner and breakfast. Check in was very poor, the receptionist did not speak English as her first language and this coupled with our Midland accent made life very dificult. She told us that... more

We booked overnight accommodation for several people six weeks in advance but ten days before we were due to stay we received a letter from the hotel saying that 'due to unforeseen circumstances' they couldn't offer us any accommodation. When we made the reservation we told the hotel that we would be attending a wedding nearby and that location was... more

Management response from
TheMaynard, Managing Director

Due to a major electrical fault it was necessary for me to close the bedrooms for a number of days. This was unfortunate, but unadvoidable. Comparable alternative accommodation was secured for the guests. I accept that this was not an ideal solution, but was I felt better than cancelling the rooms with no solution.

The Maynard is a beautiful Victorian Hotel which is full of character. We stayed in the Rutland room which was a superior room.Large size room with original windows and handles. Settee under the window and room full of sunshine. Bathroom very good with corner bath. Can be a bit noisy in this room as it faces over the road. Stunning stained... more
