“Just terrible!”
We came to the Hotel Zum Schwan in Dillenburg at the end of our walk of the Rothaarsteig and after all the friendly and pleasant hotels of the previous days it was an immense anticlimax. The whole atmosphere was one of neglect, indifference and decay (paint peeling off the woodwork, shabby furniture, stained carpets etc.). Of the two single rooms we stayed in one (at 49 euro) had no window, but only got some light and air through the bathroom, so that the bathroom door had to stay open all the time. The other room (at 45 euro) had a tiny, dirty bathroom squeezed into a cupboard. Staying on the second floor we also felt that there was a fire hazard, as there were no escape routes apart from steep heavily carpeted stairs, and that, as the hotel did not register our names or presence in any way, there might be no way of finding or identifying us in case of an emergency.
