If you are looking for the experience of a traditionnal and authentic japanese bedroom, try this ryokan in the Asakusa area, well described by MrThrill. It is run by Kenichi and Fusako who live on the 2nd floor. They are very helpful and give precious pieces of advice. The booking and payment in advance process might be awkward but safe... More

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights in October 2011. We were originally going to Japan in May 2011 but due to the tsunamai in March and subsequent travel warnings we decided to postpone until September. Unfortunately the ryokan requires you to pay in advance and doesn't offer a refund if you vary your dates unless they are... More

Stayed here for 10 days in december of 08 was such a beautiful little place. it's incredibly basic - don't expect room service and a bar fridge but i'm pretty sure for this price the only other accomodation available in tokyo is a backpacker dorm or a capsule hotel. the walls are paper thin so bring ear plugs. we had... We spent a weekend at Tokyo Ryokan in early April and it was a really good experience. At the time, it was not too long after the earthquake so we were very concerned about the conditions in Japan. The owners Kenichi san and Fusako san were extremely helpful and responsive in their communications prior to our trip, taking care to... More

We stayed here for one night and found it to be a nice and comfortable stay. Compared to the prices of some of the other Ryokans this really is the best your going to get for the price you pay - 3500 yen. Owner is friendly and very informative and chatty!

For travellers on a limited budget, Tokyo Ryokan is a great option. There are some fairly strict house rules and some slightly frustrating quirks (30 second bursts of hot water in the shower; rice pillows unfamiliar to my western sleeping habits), but most of which I suspect are to ensure harmony amongst the guests in the three rooms who all... This hotel is a little oasis of calm. The room was small, but if you're in Tokyo, you'll probably not be spending much time in it anyway. The hosts are charming and helpful. And to find somewhere this inexpensive in the second most expensive city in the world is quite remarkable. It's conveniently located for Ueno, with its fantastic park... More

The Ryokan was a bit hard to find though I blame that on sleep deprovation as well as misreading the directions. Once we found it Kenichi was very helpful in helping us get around Tokyo and explaining how things work as well as helping us find things to do to fill our time. I will definitely be staying here again!

We (family of 2 Adults and 3 Children 11, 12 &15 yrs old) chose this traditional Japanese accommodation after reading the reviews on Trip advisor, but we also noticed that it had been recommended in lonely planet. Tokyo Ryokan has three tatatmi mat guestrooms with traditional shoji (paper) screens on the second floor of the house, with a shared toilet... More
