Stayed for one night after coming in from Airport. Relatively easy to find, in a neat neighborhood of shops and temples. Japanese style room was plenty of room, although the bathroom was minuscule. The bed mat in Japanese style room is skinny, so make sure you are prepared for that. The Japanese bath is wonderful after a long flight. For... more

Shigetsu is a lovely japanese Inn just short walk away from the Nakamise shopping street and the Sensoji temple. The staff is lovely and the room was very comfortable. You could feel the traditional in that Inn. more

what a great location - near a lovely shrine, which was celebrating Chinese Lantern flowers while we there; a very short walk to the Ueno train station; a few blocks from Kitchen Town! The famous covered shopping mall was fascinating, we loved watching the bean paste cookies being made, loved the huge variety of stalls. It's definitely NOT just for... more

I am totally in agreement with Jon from Calgary. The position is OK, the staff is OK. The hotel is, however, full of bed bugs. If you don't mind to have the itching boils for the next month (you will get a cream for free), and a danger of contaminating your appartment/house at home, you may enjoy this hotel. I... more

I first happened upon Shigetsu in April, returned in May and June, and am heading back there in a couple of weeks' time. The rooms. A "Western Single" room is slightly more than twice the size of a single bed, and with a reasonably-sized ensuite, whilst the "Japanese Single" rooms are a bit bigger and also have an ensuite. I... more

The ryokan is in a great location, although difficult to locate. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. We were quite pleased with our japanese style suite until we started to notice the small red tick like bugs. The first one we saw was crawling on the bed (which was on the floor) and after that we started to see... more

This lovely ryokan is in a great location: lots of covered markets, restaurants.... only 2 stops from Ueno station, or 1/2 hour walk. My room was always spotless, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Great baths on the top floor. more

Maybe I should had that I am a Japan enthousiast to soften the title... I still wonder why foreigners go to western-style hotels, while ryokans are such a great experience... and way cheaper! I had a japanese style room (with tatami flooring). Very good, nice sober decoration. Location is exceptional, for those who like Asakusa (and I love this area).... more

Spent our last night in Japan at Asakusa Shigetsu ryokan. The price was more than we'd pay for a western room in a business hotel, but it was also more comfortable. (Well, we didn't like the pillows at any ryokan, but that's not their fault.) The public bath (mens & womens are separate) was very nice. But the location was... more

If you are visiting Japan for the first time just for leisure, and are in doubt among a occidental room and a Japanese style, choose the latter, with no doubts. We enjoyed the “beds” arranged in the floor, the Japanese bath, using traditional clothes, the Japanese breakfast (it was not included in room`s price). The room was surprisingly spacious (OK,... more
