We thought we would take a look at Talbot House on our way back to the ferry at Calais. We expected to see an old house and then walk around Poperinge. In fact we spent nearly an hour and a half in a beautiful house steeped in history. The house has such a peacful air about it and is hosted... More

I have been staying at Talbot House for many years, and seen it improve its standards hugely during that time. Though not luxurious by any means, TocH provides good comfortable rooms in an historic location, that is a must to stay in, particularly if you are doing a First World War battlefield tour. Friendly and helpful staff, a wonderfully peaceful... More

For many who lived through, or sadly died in, the hellish nightmare of trench life and the battles in Ypres Salient, Talbot House was a soldiers house, a small piece of home, away from the boredom, the mud, the rats & lice, the bombs and bullets that brought so much death to so many, in these, now very peaceful, Flanders... Toc-H is a name I remember from childhood, being an ex-servicemen's organisation. It was signallers' code for TH and short for Talbot House, the all-ranks rest and recuperation centre, founded in 1915 by the Rev. Philip 'Tubby' Clayton, a British Army chaplain. That was as much as I knew until we visited Poperinge in September. We entered the large museum... More

If you're into WW1 military history and you want a really great place to stay local to Ypres, then Talbot house is THE place. Even if you don't stay, it's a must see. The volunteers that look after it (change at intervals) were really friendly, helpful & sat down with us well into the night talking about anything & everything.... More

Staying in this B&B is as going back in the time. With its root in the "Great War" one still can sens a sort of serenity. Not for luxury seekers, it is the history that does it and the management couple is willing to tell you all about it.

How lucky to be able to stay in the rooms that weary soldiers from WW1 were staying in. The House is a must see place whether or not you stay here. It has wonderful displays and a great atmosphere to soak up. The man at the front desk on the museum side was one of the most interesting and helpful... More

Talbot House was established in December 1915 as a place of refuge for the Commonwealth soldiers of the Great War who were fighting in the Ypres Salient of Belgium. It operates today, as it has since 1931, as a hotel/hostel/museum - a wonderful place of memorial and fun. Rooms are available , each with a story, and there is a... More

Our second vist to Talbot House this year! If your after hotel levels of comfort and service then look elsewhere! Talbot House is a WW1 historic sight which has been left more or less as it was in 1916! Therefore you will have to live without en suite's and room service! What you do get is a genuine slice of...
