La Ducrie is a magical kingdon run by two talented wizards - Joe and Vivianne. My husband and I came to France to renew our wedding vows and found out about La Ducrie through an acquaintance. We stayed for three glorious days at the castle and made memories that will last a lifetime. Much has been said in other reviews... more

If you are going to the Normandy region of France, Joe and Vivian are the best, most amazing hosts ever. Their castle, La Ducrie, is the homiest of homes, their hospitality is unrivaled, and if Duke fit in my suitcase he would be gone!! We arrived, thinking staying in a castle may be fun, if chilly. Boy, were we wrong!!... more

La Ducrie in the tiny hamlet of Le Hommet D' Arthenay is a 15th century Norman castle that has been converted into a lovely, upscale B&B. I couldn't help but chuckle at the previous review - yes, castles have stairs and low ceilings. And I, too, bumped my head. Unfortunately, builders of that era were more concerned about defense and... more

While all the reviews on La Ducrie are accurate in pointing out the unique Norman castle, friendly hosts and pets, fresh croissants, etc., there are a couple things travelers should note. First, staying here involves climbing a spiral staircase to the rooms and then ducking down to enter the rooms and bathrooms. I bumped my head several times! Second, while... more

Joe,Vivienne,Duke ,George,Buster and Tom greet you at the door like long time friends. They are wonderful hosts, what b&bs are suppose to be. Joe is full of information about the area,in particular the Normandy beaches. Vivienne even got me to eat chicken which I never do at home with her wonderful Coq ou Vin dinner. The castle is warm and full... more

Joe & Vivienne, your hosts, are extremely friendly, sweet & down to earth. Joe tells some excellent stories, all funny & interesting. The home they own is super - very nicely decorated with lots of antiques, but very comfortable. We stayed in La Salle de Monnaie, which was a huge bedroom, with very comfy linens, pillows, etc. They are extremely accommodating... more

La Ducrie was one of the best places we have stayed ever! Joe and Vivienne were fantastic hosts. We had great conversations and Joe was a wealth of information regarding D-day beaches and WWII history. And Vivienne was an outstanding cook. Would highly recommend La Ducrie! more

My wife & I celebrated 25 yrs of marraige with a dinner party for 20 guests in the morroccan palace marquee in the grounds of La-ducrie. Our hosts Joe and Vivienne Helling organised everything; the food was sensational and the location stunning. A unique and memorable occasion for all our guests from the UK. Joe and Vivienne know how to... more

La Ducrie is a very unusual B&B, more like visiting with friends at their lovely stone Norman castle, complete with moat, dogs & cat, black swans, ducks and sheep! Joe & Vivienne are charming, gracious and funny. When they learned that my husband wanted more than the standard European breakfast (cheese, cold cuts, breads, juice) they graciously added scrambled eggs... more

The first thing to make clear is that this is not a hotel and not a B&B. In reality you are staying as guests, albeit paying guests, at the home of friends. If the hosts, Joe and Viv are not friends when you arrive, they will be by the time you leave. Joe and Viv are wonderfully kind people who... more
