Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The stay at the Hawthorns was lovely. They allow dogs to stay and have a big field for on lead due to cattle in adjacent fields. They received a welcome pack and the room is nice. They did a lovely cooked breakfast and had fruit, cereal and toast.

This was a lovely warm friendly house. They’re very dog friendly with two dogs of their own and the knowledge and experience to make their dog guests and human guests comfortable. Very easy to find, half way between Thurso and JoG. Will very happily come again. Living room to relax, very comfortable and quiet bedrooms.

The Hawthorns is a great B&B, out in the quiet countryside surrounded by pasture, but within easy driving distance to the John O'Groats ferry & restaurants near Thurso. Graeme & Eilean are wonderful hosts - their breakfasts were fantastic (while addressing wife's gluten free needs). The busy bird feeders outside the dining room window are an unexpected plus. Our room was spacious & clean, bed very comfortable.

We received a very warm welcome from Graham on our arrival and were shown to our spacious and very comfortable, clean room. Graham and Eileen are excellent hosts who provided everything you could need or think of. Breakfast was cooked fresh to order and plenty of it. They are very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and ready to give advice. We hope to visit again sometime.

Our travelagent couldn’t book the usual hotel, so they booked the Hawthorns B&B for us.. The best decision ever! The location is beautyful, the rooms are comfortabele and Eilean and Graeme are lovely people. Several funny remarks about closing the window and using slippers make you smile as soon as you walk info the room. When we return to Scotland we definitly return to the Hawthorns B&B! Francis, André and Ronald

We were met by Graeme and Eileen and given such a warm welcome, then shown to our room and all the facilities were explained to us. The room was spacious with a queen size bed, a seating area, tea and coffee making and an ensuite bathroom. The room and bathroom were very clean and well presented, and located in a quiet, peaceful rural setting. Lots of extras were included i.e. slippers, tea and coffee and toiletries. A full cooked breakfast was available and served in the dining room the next morning – again all very well presented by our hosts. Paid parking directly outside on the street. Good fast wifi is included. 10min drive to Gills bay for the ferry. We would definitely stay again – thanks.
