If you find yourself visiting Daisetsuzan National Park (大雪山国立公園) look up this large hotel. It is located in Sōunkyō (層雲峡) Gorge, site of the Kurodake Ropeway and the Sōunkyō Hyōbaku Festival. The festival is a celebration of ice sculptures and castles, lit up with colorful lights. Hotel Taisetsu is big - and can seem pretty impersonal especially when the big... More

My partner and I just spent three very enjoyable days at the Hotel Taisetsu, which is located just above an older ski resort village in Sounkyo Canyon. The Japanese style rooms are large and attractive; be sure to ask for a room on the garden side of the hotel, as the rooms located above the parking lot can be noisy.... More

Part of our 7D Hokkaido tour, this onsen hotel is simply amazing.Quality onsen baths (there are at least 5 baths in different wings/level of the hotel) , fabulous dinner/breakfast & we also loved the fireworks at 8pm !

The room was clean and cosy. When we first arrived, there was only a low table and chairs in the middle of the room. We had to set out the mattresses ourselves from the cupboard, onto the tatami mat, and also push the table to a corner so that there would be enough space. The mattresses were quite comfy. There... Luxurious is the word to describe the experience. And of course, it comes with a hefty price tag as well. But if you are willing to splurge on a 1-2 nights stay, this is the place to do it. Tucked away in a separate wing of the otherwise ordinary-looking Hotel Taisetsu, staying at the Yukihana wing offers the ryokan experience... More

We wanted to stay at Sounkyo and read all the Tripadvisor reviews. Based on those reviews we were bracing ourselves for a stay that had the potential to disappoint. We were more than pleasantly surprised. We saw no evidence that the hotel wasn't friendly to foreigners - just the opposite. The staff were very friendly and went out of their... More

The hotel is really foreigner unfriendly. The lobby, even the room has a smell the moment you walk in. Staff at the breakfast hall was rude. Overall, the stay at this hotel was a sore disappointment. The only saving grace were the mountain views.
