We travelled as a family with our two sons to Nozawa Onsen for a week of skiing. This was our first time skiing in Japan and we had decided to stay in a traditional Ryokan. This was a good decision since we had a very nice stay at Kawaichiya with all family members enjoying the week very much. We stayed... More

We stayed here for five nights to ski and visit the hot springs. Our main concern before the trip was that it would be cold in the room. It wasn't, at all. We chose to have only breakfast at the hotel, and eat dinner out on the town. Our kids ended up not liking the breakfast so much (they're 2&4),... More

It was the first time to Nozawa Onsen. In tow were my wife and two kids 7 and 8 years old. Also, never skied before. The public bus from the train station dropped us in the heart of the village. It was a 7 min walk to the Ryokan. Bear in mind that we were pulling luggage and kids in... More

My wife and I were staying in this hotel for 4 nights during our ski trip in Feb 2013. This is our first time to ski in Nozawa Onsen and this hotel is just located at the heart of this small city, easily access to everything surrounding it, the ski ground, shops, public bath, transportation...etc. The staffs there (esp Kono... This year was our 3rd year back at Nozawa Onsen, and our 3rd year staying at Kawaichiya ryokan. Kono san has looked after us on all of our stays and we are always impressed with the spotless rooms, excellent service and fresh traditional Japanese food. The hot springs are very clean and are a fantastic way to finish the day.... More

We spent 6 nights here when skiing at Nozawa. The ryokan is terrific and we have stayed at many ryokans. In a great location within easy access of the moving walkway up to the snow and round the corner from all the restaurants and shops of Nozawa, the hotel has a great indoor and outdoor bath for each gender -... Just returned from Nozawa onsen and stayed here for 3 nights. Overall, no complaints about the place for the price. Location is a bit off the travelator that goes up the ski slopes but its only about 15 mins of walk (though keep this in mind if you are lugging your own skis/boards and boots). Onsen comprises 2 pools, one... More

I first stayed here with my wife in 2003, our second ski trip to Japan, and fell in love both with Nozawa Onsen and this hotel. We have tried a number of other ski resorts in Japan (Appi Kogen, Mt Hakoda, Gala, Habuka) and elsewhere since then, but have ended up coming back to Nozawa Onsen every other year (2005,... More

We returned to Kawaichiya Ryokan in January 2011. This time we had our teenage son along and were accommodated in the newer part of the building, which is serviced by an elevator. We’d previously stayed in the older part of the building, which is walk up, though this was never a hassle for us. The newer rooms do reflect their... More

Booked a western style twin bed room with the tiniest bathroom you have ever seen. It has all you need with no frills. The owner was the only person I met who had any English. Staff were very friendly - no problems. Only do Japanese breakfast - you either like it or not (I didn t, my husband did). Beds... More
