Fudoin is a temple based on the teaching of Fudomyo-o (a saint who is the symbol of determination), founded as one of the twelve temples by Saiko, a high monk, in Nishitani in 906 and located in the southern part of the centre of the mountain, which a very convenient area for a visit. The temple is also known as the main temple for the Yamashinas (an Imperial family branch) and is called "Yamashina Betsuin". Bifukumonin, the Emperess of Emperor Toba, was a devout follower of Kobodaishi and buried here at Fudoin, just as she wished in her will, in respect for her life-time contributions to the temple, such as donating Konshi-Kindei Amida-kyo and three Amida statues. At this temple, you can enjoy your meals with a great view of our relaxing and beautiful garden, attend the morning devotional service and read and transcribe scriptures in a quiet environment, far away from traffic. This will be your "ultimate healing experience", which only this historic temple can offer.

Room - we opted for the Junior suite which came with attached bathroom and a huge tub. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the room and had a wonderful view of the garden. Location - easy 2 min walk from the bus stop Food - we were served dinner in a beautiful private room. We are not vegetarians but we really love the food. We had breakfast in a dining hall - wonderfully decorated. Again, breakfast was simple but delicious. They speak simple English and if needed, there is always Google Translate. Glad to have had our first temple stay experience in Fudoin. Would gladly stay here again.

After spending two hours getting to the temple from Namba, it was refreshing to absorb the peace and tranquility of the place. The place is just a short walk up a slight slope from the bus stop where we got off. Check-in was smooth with good explanation on the place and the facilities. Place was spotless and they ensured that by helping to clean the wheels of our luggage. Room is of ample size for four of us in a traditional setting sleeping on tatami mats. A toilet is attached to my room but the bathing facilities is a sharing facility which was clean and spacious. Dinner and breakfast were superb vegetarian meals. We also had a great experience with the morning prayers which also taught us a meditation method. This place is within easy walking distance to the small town center with restaurants for lunch. Bus schedule to other places are posted on the bus stops. Overall, we had a peaceful stay here which was a good break from the hustle of the big cities.…

I actually stayed here around 2016. I loved Koyasan and loved this stay, even more! I’d go back to Japan just to stay here, again. The monks singing is magical and I got THE BEST SLEEP I’VE EVER HAD on their tatami beds! And I am a notoriously picky sleeper. They had these amazingly soft comforters, which you could layer, and it felt like sleeping in a cloud! I’ve been searching for them since and have never figured out how to replicate them. And our room was huge and the dinner was, literally, the only good food I had in all of Japan! Probably bc it was vegan, so there were no worms (that look like French fries) or “vegetarian” surprises, like snail eggs or ink gushing squid, etc. Love Koyasan, and this was the best!!!!

We spent 4 days of our vacation on the Kii Peninsula and ended at Koya-san, a magical and serene setting that was worth the trek to get there. Staying at Fudoin was really special and much more comfortable than I’d expected. While spartan in some ways (dated sinks and toilets), the rooms themselves were very comfortable and spacious and the bedding was top notch. The highlights of our stay were the artfully presented and delicious vegetarian meals and joining the monks in the morning prayer service (English handouts provided). The prayer hall is reached by passing rooms in the monks’ quarters with beautifully painted panel doors - I wish they’d had information on the rooms and the artwork available for guests. Overall, we’d highly recommend this property and a visit to Koyasan!…

I had the opportunity to stay at two different ryokan temples while on Mt Koya. This was the second of the two, and I am glad that I had the chance to compare. Both were different experiences. Koyasan Shukubo Fudoin was a newer, shinier ryokan compared to my other temple stay. While both offered the same broad features, this temple was aimed more at upscale visitors. I read several comments about Mt. Koya while researching where bloggers complained about the temple stay experience. First, you need to know what you are going to experience. However, this is more for those who might complain about other temple experiences given the more upscale polish. What I did like about Koyasan Shukubo Fudoin was the dining room (my other ryokan temple you ate in your room), the room size and a beautiful garden.…

I won't describe much as I don't want to spoil the future visits but it was a very peaceful break during our Japan tour. The rooms are beautifully simple. Make sure you wear very warm clothes if visiting in autumn/winter though!!! The baths are open from 4:30pm to 9pm. Dinner was wonderful. Breakfast was nice, different from anything you've ever tasted on your life! Make sure to go to the night cemetery tour at Ekoin (5 min walk and bookable online). I would like to thank the monks again for their warm welcome.

From the moment we (mother/daughter) arrived at Fudo-In, we knew we had stumbled into a once in a lifetime experience. We were greeted by a diligent and hard-working monastery worker who showed us how to arrange our slippers, checked us into our room, and explained all of the necessary information (dinner time, bath hours) -- even with his limited english. His devotion to his task and to his interaction with visitors was truly touching (and the warmth we felt towards him even gave us a pang to say goodbye the next day). Our room was large, with a patio overlooking a garden, absolutely stunning. After spending the afternoon exploring the town and temples, we returned to Fudo-In for a DELICIOUS, beautiful, masterfully-presented vegan meal. The next morning, we participated in the monks' prayer ceremony, which was very special. The monk spoke to the group after the meditation -- first in japanese, and then in english -- which we weren't expecting, and was so wonderful! Again an incredible meal, and we left after breakfast. If you're looking for a peaceful, powerful, close to nature experience, Koyasan is the place to go, and I can't recommend Fudo-in highly enough.…

We ended our family vacation with a single night in Koyasan. It is certainly a schlep and we managed to miss the train and arrived later than we'd anticipated so our time here was short. That said with was a lovely ending to our trip and we really enjoyed Fudo-In. The monks were so sweet and kind. The morning prayer was fascinating and insightful, as was the nighttime tour of the cemetery, which we participated in (through Elkoin temple). The food, as many have said, is delicious and vegetarian and somewhat sparse. My 18 year old son was hungry for sure, but we had anticipated and brought snacks. Well worth a visit.

This is the second visit but first time stay at Mt. Koya (and in an '-in', i.e. hall). Although there are many halls, Mt. Koya actually is a single temple. Overall stay experience is excellent. This hall located on a small slope and a bit away from the main road, it is good if you need a more quiet environment. The monks are helpful and very good command of English. Not all areas in the hall are opened for visitors. You should expect this place is only for stay, and go out to visit other place and look around instead. Few things to be mentioned: there is morning ceremony everyday at 0700, free to join. Breakfast serves at 0745, dinner at 1745. The hall closes at 2100. All meals are vegetarian. All rooms has no bed, you will sleep on tatami. No boiler at room, but they will prepare a hot water pot for you. You may get more from reception. Some room may not have private bathroom. Tips for visit: Keep your luggage small and light. Check the bus schedule beforehand.…

Nice experience. The room was very large with a beautiful view of the garden. We choice the room with private bath tube. The dinner was stunning, even if you are not a vegetarian it’s worth a try. We have attended also the morning pray, this also is a experience to do.
