I last stayed here over 6 years ago. The hotel and staff are great. Food is good and plenty of it. Rooms are spacious and have all you need including free view TV, tea and coffee facilities. Showers could do with being more powerfull but that's purely a personal thing from someone who likes a shower to blow your head... More

We were attending a function in the hotel on Saturday night so only stayed the one night. We were met at reception and shown our room by the friendly owner. We had a lovely, freshly cooked meal in the restaurant Would recommend the Spinach & Ricotta Cannelloni and the Sirloin steak. The room itself was clean and comfortable. Would certainly... More

We chose the Northern Sands because it is very close to the Ferry Port for the Orkney Islands. We didn't realise at the time of booking that it was also very close to the most wonderful beaches! Luckily we arrived in time and had time to go and play on the beaches - it's beautiful! We also saw a beautiful... More

I read the more recent reviews again before writing this and noticed that there is quite a time gap between the more recent 4. Interested to read the ones about rooms being updated... We had room 10 and it was massive. We were travelling with 4 other couples so we took 5 of their rooms for 2 nights. Ours was... More

My husband became ill whilst driving and we needed a place for the night and saw their sigh for vacancies and a fair room rate. The place was empty, we were the only guests staying there, so when we were shown to a room at the back of the hotel and a tiny room at that we were disappointed. We... More

We stayed three nights at the Northern Sands in a family room. The location of the hotel is excellent - just a few minutes from the wonderful Dunnet Sands beach and within easy reach of other beautiful beaches and attractions (the castle of Mey, John O' Groats etc) with pleny of opportunities for spotting wildlife like seals. From the outside... More

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for one night with our baby. We had phoned ahead to see if we could get a room from which our monitor would work allowing us to have a meal in the restaurant while our daughter slept. The staff were very helpful and allowed us to try the monitor to select the... More

A nostalgic return trip to Caithness after 10 years away. Stayed at the Northern Sands in 1998 and just chanced that they would have a free room on my arrival. They did..room 6. I had told my travel companion this time, about the Hotel, especially how I arrived very late on my last visit and the hotel was shrouded in... More
