Yes the motel is old and it's been let run down a bit. Probably 30 years over-due for an upgrade. BUT once you get over the shock of the "budget" accommodation, you appreciate that it provides you with what you need. We stayed here for two nights that bookended a longer trip on Doubtful Sound. We stayed in two different rooms. The first was a bit older but still clean and functional. We stayed at the motel for 1 night. Checked in late in the night and checked out early in the morning. The reception staff was very helpful and made arrangements for our late check-in. Although in need of a lick of paint. This is a well situated motel with fantastic views over Lake Manapouri. Our unit was comfortable with a large sitting out area. We stayed here one night. The view of the lake is what made this place nice. A great sunset. The rooms were nothing special but clean and nice view from the window. Highly recommended! Units are very nice with bedroom area, TV, en suite facilities, and sitting area outside each room with stunning views of Lake Manapouri. Pub and bottle shop located next door to get a bottle of wine or beer to enjoy while looking out over the lake and relaxing. Rooms are clean and quiet. Only complaint was shower heads... more

If you are taking the Doubtful Sound cruise and staying over in Manapouri, if you have time, it might be best to look for other lodging. There are single cabins at a nearby facility. This is a two-star property, strip-motel. The rooms are small and tired. The plus is convenience to the cruise terminal. Another plus is a restaurant. more

The Manapouri Motor Inn is the closest accommodation to Doubtful Sound but avoid it. It's a dump. Cobwebs in the room. Sagging bed. Islolated location and terrible food in their restaruant. I was served raw eggplant. Stone steps so inaccessible to anyone in wheelchair or using a cane, etc. Lots more choices for sleeping and eating in Te Anau which... more
