Udzungwa Forest is a little-known treasure: go if you get a chance. It has two endemic monkeys (including the red colobus) and many indigenous birds. Hondo Hondo Lodge is right on the edge of the reserve and the staff are extremely friendly - ask and they will try to help. However, the organisation is somewhat shambolic and we did feel... More

Staying at Hondo Hondo lodge was a lifetime experience because we got to stay in the mi9ddle of the forest. The lodge was fully ecologic and it was as good as staying in a hotel. More

First off, it is well worth the long-trip to Hondo Hondo to hike in the Udzungwa mountains. There are so few places in Tanzania where you walk for long distances, that it was a treat to be on foot (albeit with an armed ranger, park guide, etc.). We did the three-day climb of the park's second-highest peak, Mwanihana, and had... More

Hello MKirsh - Great that you had such a good time :) Especially glad to hear you enjoyed the insect fun - it is amazing how many species will appear, from the ordinary bugs through the weird and wonderful beetles and massive preying mantises. Hope you can visit us again and maybe even venture into the tented rooms for a... More

Udzungwa was one of the highlights of our two weeks in Tanzania, and I would recommend Hondo Hondo as a good place to stay. We stayed in one of the bandas (thatched huts) for $120/night (full board), which is rather like camping in a large tent (i.e., don't come expecting luxury--be ready for some insects and a bit of dirt).... Magical place. Fantastic setting, very friendly staff and great accomodation at a good price. I went in December 2011 and stayed for 3 nights. The food was excellent; the full english breakfast is indeed fantastic, and the evening meals were also cooked to a very high standard. For me the only small issue was that the food was all western... More

Hello Ceriog Sounds like you had a good time with us which we are of course happy to hear about. Point taken about the darkness around camp after sunset - we are trying to balance eco-efficiency and power/kerosene use with health and safety! We hear you though and are now looking into installing low-energy LED lighting along the paths to... More

The trip out to Hondo Hondo from Mikumi was a hot one. I'd been in the bush for days and was hot, sweaty and dusty. Upon arrival I was handed a cold wet towel. Bliss!! This pretty much set the scene for my entire stay at Hondo Hondo. The banda i stayed in was well equipped and even had UK... More

We spent 2 nights in the tented camp. We visited the Udzungwa Mountain National Park and hiked to the Sonjo waterfall. We had a tour of Mang'ula village on a first communion Sunday when the village was full of celebrations. Our guide knew so much about the local culture, economy and politics in addition to the birds. As he was... More

Hondo hondo means hornbill and there they are encircling the camp. On the edge of the forest, you stay in well appointed and clean tents with attached open air bathrooms. Solar lighting with no generator noises. Plenty of activities to do - walking in the forest, cycling and visiting local industries. The Sanje Waterfall is spectacular. The camp is friendly... More

So glad you enjoyed your stay! Active is a good word to describe stays at Hondo Hondo - trekking in the national park, swimming at Sanje, cycling through the valley or walking around the village, it is all about getting out there and getting involved! Thank you for your kind review and we look forward to welcoming you back here... More

Friendly, helpful staff. Still some kinks to work out in this relatively new camp. For ex. our hot water wasn't working, but we really didn't mind, since it was very hot, and a cool shower felt good. We had an excellent 3 hour tour of the village across the road. Our guide for this tour was a very knowledgeable young... More

Hello zupa, I'm glad to hear you had a grand time with us at Hondo Hondo. Sorry about your hot water - we are as you note relatively new and still installing our solar water systems so we are ironing out kinks as we go along and can assure you we have fixed this now! I am happy that you... More
