If you're staying at Volcano House to sleep atop a volcano and to get a jump on the crowds to see the park before it's mobbed, you're right on the money. We stayed in the cabins which were located a couple miles away. Although we were dissapointed that we were not staying at the crater, the cabin was really nice.
