No noise , no bustle,no sound of planes or traffic or even of people talking. No cell phones and nobody from work bothering me. Just birdsong and the low murmmer of the stream in the valley or ,from time to time, the rain skiff passing over the roof. Even good coffee in the cabin. Good walks on the property and excellent... We stayed for three wonderful days at Mohua Park. We arrived at Fergus & Mary’s house in Papatowai, where they were hosting a talk with a group of international students. We felt at home the minute we walked in and enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Mary. We set off to find Mohua Park which was clearly signposted up a... More

Thanks for such a wonderful and full review. You have covered our accommodation, our tour, our home style cooking and the peace and special quality of Mohua Park, and yes, we do get a lot of good comments about the beds. Thanks too for the memory of you arriving in the midst of a room of students - I think... More

You can't get more the middle of nowhere than first, the southern island of new Zealand, which is practically deserted (there are only two-lane roads and mostly one-lane bridges), then in the Catlins area, which is rolling hills, and then take this 7 km drive on a dirt road to a remote woodland, where you have a single cabin. I... More

There is little more to add to the other reviews that have given this place full marks. We stayed there as 2 couples for 3 nights and fully endorse all the good comments. A scenic, peaceful place with entertaining and knowledgeable hosts. We slept well and kept the doors open even when it got chilly, so that we could hear... More

We started our one month tour of the South Island in the Catlins, basically because all the books said it was beautiful and barely visited. Looking back on our trip now, we would say that no part of the South Island is more beautiful. When you go, stay at one of the cabins at Mohua Park. Your only view will... More

We stayed at accommodation owned by Fergus and Mary (the owners of Mohua Park) overlooking the mouth of the estuary at Papatowai, rather than at Mohua Park. However we visited Mohua Park, walked with Fergus through the forest round the house and had dinner there. We also did a one day wildlife tour with Fergus at Papatowai, which was one... More

Wonderful eco cottage ably demonstrating how we can live in a sustainable manner. The rural and bush surroundings guarantee all you can hear are the birds. Congratulations to Mary and Fergus on putting a wonderful vision into practice.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights of our 11-night South Island vacation. Turned out to be a great choice. Karearea cabin was just beautiful, with a panoramic view of sheep paddocks and hills beyond. The lambs! Our first day was quite stormy, so we spent the day in the cabin watching the storm and the sheep sheltering... More

Staying here really made our trip to the Catlins. We loved the privacy and comfort of Kahu Cottage, and never tired of the view over the valley (especially with lambing well underway). With a heatpump, king sized bed, all the curtains pulled we got a great sleep every night. Each morning there was birdsong all around to wake up to.... More

We recently spent three nights in the Karearea Cottage at Mohua Park, which we found clean, spacious and inviting, warm and comfortable. The views from the patio were intoxicating, all green rolling hills and countryside, just lovely…even in June, when it rains more often than not! Although there are four cottages on the property as well as the home of... More
