The Monte Rio Hotel in the rainforest town of Adjuntas is a nice place to stay if you want to explore that area a bit. The price was reasonable at around $60 a night and they take a credit card. When I called they did not speak English, I was able to reserve a room with my very limited repertoire... more

There is nothing special about Monte Rio, but also nothing not to recommend it. Adjuntas itself has little to recommend, but it does allow one to get into the mountains quickly and easily, via highway 10 from Ponce. In that regard, it is a good base, or a good starting point.
