Response from Graeme Hammond, General Manager at West Lodge Park Hotel
Responded 4 days ago
Dear Travel437318 Please accept my sincere apologies for the discomfort you experienced due to the lack of heating in the function room on Mothers Day. We had called out our technician to attend to this however he was unable to rectify it as there was a valve failure on the boiler. We then bought in two large electric heaters to warm up the rooms and make everyone more comfortable. First thing Monday morning the contractors attended and the faulty valve was repaired. Thank you for kind comments regarding the food and the staff and we look forward to welcoming you back to West Lodge Park. Kind regards Graeme Hammond Deputy General Manager

A fantastic stay at a quality hotel. Had a late check in (Midnight) and nothing was too much trouble. The room was spacious and very comfortable. I had a late check out at Midday for no extra charge. I decided to have my breakfast in my room and it came bang on time, the food was hot and tasty, one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had in a long time.

We had booked west lodge for my mums 80th birthday lunch 24th February it is somewhere the Lacey family have been coming to for over 70 years with many keystone moments celebrated with you. Having booked our table for Saturday 24th, I called back to ask if I could make the day extra special. I spoke to the most lovely lady a member of the restaurant team who said of course I could bring in a flower centre piece, table confetti a cake what ever I wanted to make mums day special. On the afternoon of the 23rd I arrived at reception with the flowers and confetti, after I introduced myself a young man said he was the restaurant manager and with no customer engagement took the flowers and rudely dismissed that the hotel didn’t allow table confetti, when I explained I had been encouraged to bring it up and he shot me down rudely and I was dismissed. Saturday lunchtime I arrived early with a couple of our guests and sat at our table at the bar, there were plenty of staff around but no one came and took our drinks order in the end I had to go to the bar to order. When the rest of the party arrived no member of staff came to welcome them, I took the ladies coats and then asked a member of staff- male mature long hair. if the coats could could be taken, I was rudely told there were coat stands in the restaurant, your member of staff then turned his back and walked off - leaving me holding the coats- how rude! Appalling service and certainly not what I expect of west lodge. No one came over to take drinks orders again I had to ask the waiter, when my husband asked for a non alcoholic lager he was over Guinness zero?…. At no point were we told our table was ready, so we made our own way - juggling coats, glasses and customers over 80 with sticks - no help at all from any member of the restaurant or bar team! we sat at the table and were given menus - the waiter came to take our order without offering us drinks -I had to ask for a wine menu - surely from your perspective that is “sales prevention” there were water glasses laid out, no water was offered. We had a lovely round table great location but shoved into the corner with no room around it for your staff to execute silver service, I do no expect my mum on her 80th birthday to serve meals and have to collect plates to pass to your staff. The food was lovely - a big thank you to the Chef. But we were very surprised and disappointed by the fact the 3 course menu did not have a meat option. But again we were let down by the restaurant team, unused glasses not collected, wine not served, no ask if we wanted additional drinks when the bottle was empty - again “sales prevention” The room was cold, the radiator next to us off, I asked the waiter if it could be turned on - he told me how to do it, after 30 minutes ut was still cold and so when the restaurant manager was serving main courses I told him - again I was rudely told all heating was on a central system and so I was wrong to be told it would heat up. When it came to desert the table was still littered with side plates and used and unused glasses - no liqueurs were offered - sales prevention! When it came time to settle the bill I was presented with a card machine - to my absolute horror and extreme embarrassment- “card fail” I was mortified it was announced to the table. I was then told that the machine rarely works that far into the room, as soon as we got to the entrance to the restaurant and reentrred my details the payment instantly when through. Firstly in this day and age there is absolutely no excuse for no Wi-Fi connection and more importantly why would you humiliate your customer by telling the table the card had failed when you know it is YOUR connection problem, it was horrific and so so embarrassing. As we left again no one came to help us with coats I had to help our guests into their coats. There was no remembrance of the flowers or cake, I had to ask for them to be prepared for me to take home for mum. The man I believe to be your restaurant manager hugely let down your restaurant hotel and brand - he was rude, offish and dismissive and constantly looked down his nose at us. There was nothing welcoming , professional or kind about him. This was a special day, the food was lovely but the whole experience was completely ruined by your restaurant manager and his management of the restaurant. You are probably wondering why I didn’t complain at the time, why I didn’t refuse to pay the inclusive service charge - it was my mums 80th birthday - I didn’t want to do anything extra to what your team had done to embarrass us. And ruin my mums day. I just love my family’s history with West Lodge and the history of West Lodge, your restaurant manager is in serious danger of serious,y impacting on your reputation and future customers. g , professional or kind about him. This was a special day, the food was lovely but the whole experience was completely ruined by your restaurant manager and his management of the restaurant.

Response from Graeme Hammond, General Manager at West Lodge Park Hotel
Responded 2 weeks ago
Dear amanda I We always appreciate comments that are both positive and negative as this helps us in improving our service. In going through your letter there are elements of lapses in service i.e. having to go to the bar for service, no one to take your coats, the lack of a non alcoholic lager being offered (which we do have), not being offered a wine list and insufficient clearing of the table during the meal, which are concerning and these issues have been discussed at length with the restaurant team. The restaurant temperature was at 24 degrees which is comfortable for all the diners in the restaurant. A new member of staff made a mistake in referring to the radiator itself. The heating is controlled by a central unit The restaurant team are adamant that water was offered to the table but this was not acknowledged and that they were in a position to serve all the party however your party decided to take the plates and pass them around. With regards to the credit card machine problem, this is regrettable as it does create embarrassment and this could have been handled better. For all the service issues that you mention I offer my sincere apologies and as already outlined these issues have been discussed with the restaurant team to prevent them from happening again. Whilst we value your custom at West Lodge Park I feel it necessary to say that I believe your comments on the Restaurant Manager are unnecessary, exaggerated and deeply upsetting. These issues could and should have been dealt with on the day and resolved. We, as a management team have absolute faith in his ability to manage the restaurant. Yours sincerely Graeme Hammond Acting General Manager

The Hotel is great and the staff very friendly but, we went with a group taking advantage of a special offer that included overnight stay, evening meal and breakfast. We ran into confusion when taking the evening meal, the menu on the table was split into two options one which appeared to be the choices for the 'included' evening meal and the other which was a la carte. We were informed by the waiter that items could be added from this to the included meal but these would incur a charge. The included meal had cauliflower soup ( no roll) or mackerel pate for starters then bream or mushroom and artichoke wellington for main. We made our order and were immediately told that there was not enough of the bream to fill our order forcing some of us to have the wellington ( this was described by three of the four recipients as awful), we then added some items from the a la carte menu, but were very unsure about how the bill would be made up. We spoke with the head waiter and he asked us to write down our complete order split between each couple, he then produced a bill for each and informed us that reception would subtract an allowance for each couple when we settled at the end of our stay. Would it not be easier and more understandable to offer special overnight guests a set allowance on their meal and then either cancel the 'included' menu or add it into the a la carte menu.

Dear RexFirkin Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback on the your stay and experience at West Lodge Park. We are working on trying to find the the best way forward regarding menus and all the management is involved in this process. Kind regards Graeme Hammond Acting General Manager

Took my mil here for afternoon tea for her 90th bd. Did not disappoint: the service was excellent and the afternoon tea delicious: plenty of food, sandwiches replenished without complaint and plenty of tea. Staff were cheerful and helpful even though there was a wedding taking place and it was busy. Would definitely return.

We had an afternoon tea event here and both the staff and the food were lovely with really fresh sandwiches and cakes. Generous servings and thoughtful help at all times. We liked the King Charles room which was pretty with nice window views.

I first stayed at West Lodge Park Hotel in 2009 when I had to visit Cockfosters regularly on business. As a woman travelling alone the hotel was a welcoming and safe place to stay, with the added bonus of having an iron and ironing board in every room so I could look smart when living out of a suitcase! Having moved jobs I now use West Lodge Park for our occasional visits to London. It's easy to park at Cockfosters tube station 5 minutes down the road and then take the tube into London, to see a show or whatever, and I can then return for a quiet nights sleep in peaceful surroundings. The hotel is much better value than staying in central London and I'd much rather stay somewhere quiet, set amongst beautiful grounds and in the warmer months to sit out on the terrace. My husband and I have just retired from running a small B&B and the hotel is where we stayed on the two occasions we were nominated (and won) national B&B awards so we have very happy memories of staying there for those reasons. As our experiences in hospitality taught us, what guests like most is a warm welcome and attention to detail and that's what, in my experience, you get at West Lodge Park. In a world of corporate uniformity, it is a pleasure to stay somewhere which is not uniform. I've stayed in a number of different rooms and they have all been different. I like that all around there is plenty of information about the history of the building, the grounds and that the photos on the walls in the bedrooms are of the place (and not some generic photo with no meaning or connection). On our visit last week, it was lovely to be welcomed back as returning guests (even though it's been over 4 years since our last stay). I look forward to staying again when I next need to visit London.

Can't fault this charming hotel with a lovely arboretum in the grounds. It has character everywhere and although the hotel is clearly from another age it has been refurbished well and everything worked just fine. The rooms were very good and had everything you needed. Breakfast was a buffet but very good and lots of choice. Service at all time was excellent.

Underwhelming breakfast experience with friends at this establishment today . Please see attached photograph & try to explain to me how half a slice of toast topped with cold bacon & avocado commands a price in excess of £9 plus supplement for bacon? One assumes a garnish was a further extra? Waitress was apologetic & wilful to make amends ,but we were bulldozed by the bolshy manager & his like it or lump it attitude . Decided to decline the breakfast & sought breakfast elsewhere , West Lodge Park hospitality needs a reality check if they don’t solely rely on “one off “ tourist trade .

Responded 28 Dec 2023
Dear Escape583696 Part of the issue here is that we allowed you to order items that are not on our menu and therefore had to be created and then priced accordingly. Producing food that is not on our menu is difficult as there is no set standard to work with and unfortunately can fall short. I do apologise that the items were not up to our normal standard. These issues have been discussed with both the Restaurant Manager and the Head Chef to ensure that our standards are met. Kind regards Graeme Hammond Acting General Manager

Recently I had a wonderful midweek stay at this beautiful hotel to celebrate my friends birthday. The room was extremely clean and comfortable with a wonderful outlook on to the grounds. The breakfast was delicious and lots of variety. The service was exceptional from all members of staff at all levels and at all times. We enjoyed a celebratory afternoon tea which was accompanied by a surprise little cake with happy. birthday on it. For anyone looking for a short break in a beautiful hotel with exquisite grands and lovely staff, I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.
