St. Eustatius, or "Statia" as it is known by all, is one of the least-known islands in the Caribbean, despite being only a short flight away from overdeveloped and overtouristed St. Martin. Once on this tiny island, the rare tourist will enjoy an impressive historic heritage, pristine coral reefs (and nary a diver in sight), well-organized hiking trails to breezy viewpoints, and a selection, albeit limited, of restaurants. Not to forget the opportunity to interact with Caribbeans as equals, which is rarely the case on other more touristed islands.
Two disclaimers: climate, and terrain. Statia is HOT during the summer, so come if you can in the winter or spring. I visited in June, and it was baking hot every day- as hot as I've ever been in the Caribbean. Nor does Statia have the gorgeous landscapes of Saba and Montserrat- it is mostly a flat island, with heights to the north and south.
