The following is the letter I sent to the owner/manager of San Antonio Chalante following our 1 night stay there Monday, March 16. Review of our stay: The only disappointment of our vacation. The lack of judgment in leaving four female guests in an isolated, feral and rural environment, with NO hotel staff on site, no telephones and no methods... more

Management response from
Chalante, Owner

For anyone concerned that they might encounter someone like the lady who saw her first snake - don't worry. In 13 years we have only had two people like that. We have been fortunate to attract nature loving people and even though we get a lot of city people as guests they are here trying to escape the city. My...

My family and I just returned from a trip to the Yucatan, which included a two night stay at the Hacienda Chalante. It is a special property and we are fortunate to have stayed here. The hacienda is really two restored buildings, set some distance apart on spacious, lovely grounds. The owners have slowly been restoring the hacienda- the original... more

Had a lovely stay at the Hacienda late in November. To get there, head north from Hwy 180 outside of Merida, towards Izamal. When you get to the small town of Sudzal, turn right and the Hacienda is about a mile down on your right. We stayed there after enjoying a day in Izamal. First thing you notice is how... more

I spent one absolutely delightful night at the wonderful Hacienda San Antonio Chalante. This converted hacienda is not a posh 5-star lodging, nor does it pretend to be. Instead, it is comfortable, casual, and welcoming. As others have noted, it has been lovingly restored and furnished with style, comfort, and charm. The bathrooms have been modernized and have lots of... more

This place was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip in the Yucatan. If you plan to go to Izamal and have a car , it is a great place to stay. We loved Izamal for the church, folk art museum and the easy to find artists. The Hacienda is outside of Izamal and just outside the the... more

DEcided to break our drive from Ticul to Rio Lagartos and stayed one night at this amazingly good value hacienda. We were the only guests and didn't see anyone else between when we checked in and breakfast the next morning. Total seclusion amidst faded shabby chic. Room as very comfortable and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was plentiful and good... more

My husband and I spent two nights at Chalante during our honeymoon. I can honestly say that visiting the Hacienda was one of the highlights of our Mayan Riviera experience. Perhaps it was the six hour non-directo bus ride that made us feel like we had completely left the modern world but once we arrived we felt like we had... more

Driving to Izamal we stumbled upon the village of Sudzal, we went on the small country road leading out of Sudzal and arrived upon Hacienda Chalente, it immediately attracted us, for its lived-in and deserted look. The room was large and comfortable, the bathroom above what we expected for the price and the grounds charming. We were the only guests... more

Unfortunately, we spent only one night here. If we could have, we would have spent several more, to ride and explore the area at a nice pace. I would say the photos on their website are pretty accurate. The place was very nice (and strongly recommended), but do realize, when you are paying a fourth (sixth?) of the price of... more
