Although we were staying at Whitton Lodge, just 2 mins walk away, we decided to give this pub a try for a meal. It was extremely busy when we arrived and were told if we didn''t mind a bit of a wait there would be no trouble with ordering food. Richard behind the bar kept us updated with the progress of our meal and even though he was rushed off his feet would still take time for a natter when possible. The meal was really tasty and although we decided to eat in the bar as it had a nice atmosphere, there is a lovely restaurant for those who want a more formal dinner. At the end of the night we had a chat with Richard who told us a few places of interest to visit. Would go back again as it is a very friendly local pub, and even though Richard is a vegan he is still an ok guy. more

My wife and I stayed the night on our way South as it just a little bit off the M1. Small pub in rural setting at a T junction with a few rooms. There is plenty of parking.

Room was clean and we received a friendly welcome. En suite bathroom clean and working ok.

The bar was very quiet and we enjoyed a meal off the bar menu. Excellent full English breakfast.

The only thing that spoiled it was the bed, which was very uncomfortable. I think the mattress was time expired. We ended up sleeping head to foot.

There was no management on duty in the morning, just the breakfast cook, so I left a note suggesting the management try the bed for themselves.

If the bed has been fixed then we would recommend it -- otherwise not.

Handy for Peak District & Hardwicke Hall
