This is a beautiful old hotel, the rooms are comfortable and cozy--it is clean, cozy and, best of all a good deal! In one direction we have a bay window overlooking some a beautiful neighborhood of old homes, out of the other window a view of the parlament buildings two blocks away. On the ground floor there is a tacky... more
So the critics say the rooms are small, there's no elevator, and the carpets are musty. But honestly, this is a decent hotel in a quiet location. So are the rooms small? Actually, this is a quirky hotel---renovated several times since 1911, when it was built---and the rooms vary in size. We had one with two beds, and the room... more
I didn't have very high expectations, but I was disappointed. The location is good, and I expected something similar to a Courtyard Marriott. I got something akin to an airport motel. There is no elevator and at least four floors -- note to self, it's not fun carrying your luggage that many flights. You've probably never done it before. The... more
My husband and I,both seniors.stayed overnight at James Bay Inn.We both were satisfied with our stay.Yes,the rooms are small, but remember this is the third "oldest" hotel in Victoria. It has a great history. The rooms are clean and quiet. If you have a problem with stairs just remember James Bay doesn't have some of the "modern convieniences",no a/c or elevators. It is walking distance... more
We stayed here for nearly a week in July and thought it was a great little hotel. Yes, the room was rather small, but we do not go on vacation to lounge around in our hotel room! The room and bathroom were spotless, the staff friendly and prompt, and the location really can't be beat. It's close to nearly everything... more
Stayed 4 nights in mid April 2005. This is our second year in a row and we will be back. Terriffic 'non commercial' atmosphere and a landmark in the city. Easy walking distance (10 min) to inner harbour, Empress, Beacon Hill Park, Legislature, Royal Museum and the James Bay neighbourhood; one of the first neighbourhoods in the city. Very inexpensive... more
We had booked for 2 nights, & 2 rooms for ourselves and our daughter and family, but decided to move on after the first night. The rooms were clean, quite adequate, and very near everything. All within walking distance. It's a heritage building, so don't expect any air. Expect to sleep with the windows open - some with no screens and... more
What an excellent hotel! We stayed here in the summer of 2004, and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We were in a room with a Queen bed, facing the front with a gorgeous window. The room was spotless, and there were no traces of the supposed smelly carpets! The location was central to our activities, about 10 minutes away from downtown but... more
We chose to stay here because of the great neighborhood location, close distance to downtown, and carriage route. The James Bay has a charming exterior and lobby, and remodeled pub and restaurant which are great. The staff is very nice. However the rooms are sadly way past their prime. The beds are comfortable and the rooms clean, but very quirky.... more
