Easily one of the best (if not the best) hostels I have ever stayed in. The ethos of the hostel was reflected in the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Many travelers will appreciate the quirkiness, independence, environmentally friendly alternative experience that this hostel offers over many of it's rivals. Free coffee and an organic breakfast buffet far superior to the usual fayre.... more

Great place, cool people, very good location in old city, near old port, museums and bars. You can stay alone if you feel so or chat with the others. The shared kitchen-common room is a funky patchwork. more

It was a relief to stay here after some dodgy experiences elsewhere. This place is great, relaxed, cool staff, comfortable rooms and it was fantastic to stay in the Old City. The staff helped me move rooms to avoid snorers and I was able to check out different rooms. There was a great mix of travelers, and everything seemed too... more

The Auberge Alternative du Vieux Montreal was a nice place to stay at a very reasonable price. The common room is great- funky colored walls, great music, excellent kitchen facilities- and the rooms and bathrooms were clean. Some quibbles- some of the bathrooms don't lock so that was off-putting at first. You figure pretty quickly that if a door is... more

I've stayed in a number of hostels, and this is one of my favorites. There is a huge common area with a big kitchen, both of which are conducive to hanging out and meeting other travelers. Good free coffee always available, along with free internet access. The staff's friendly and helpful, the bathrooms clean, and the whole place is cozy.... more

Great place, really enjoyed the arty atmosphere, nice to be treated like a human instead of the usual impersonal atmosphere. I really appreciated their take on no or low advertising in the common room. One of the staff told me they don't advertise anywhere because they don't have to, just word of mouth says it all. I would recommend it... more

I stayed at this hostel last summer... it was the cheapest place that I found in Montreal so I didn't expect a lot... but the place is really cosy, atmosphere is very friendly, the beds are comfortable enough to sleep and the staff is very helpful... they try to solve every question or problem that you let them know... and..... more

I stayed in this hostel last winter with a couple of my friends and we absolutely loved it. None of us has ever been in a hostel before, and we were somewhat nervous about it. Everything about the hostel was fantastic. We stayed in the yellow room, where we had a beautiful view from our windows. This is in the... more

This is the best hostel - Each room was a different color - warm yellow or bright green or blue...The commons area is warm and cozy with an open kitchen, wood floors, stone walls, books, coffee, and free internet...In a beautiful part of town...Music from cafes and horse-drawn carriages float up to your window at night... more

I had a great experince staying at the Auberge Alternative du Vieux-Montréal/Alternative Backpackers of Old Montréal for three nights in April 2002. The staff was nice, friendly, laid-back, and very accomodating. The rooms were clean and sunny. I stayed in the "Big Blue" room the first two nights. It was full of bunk beds and backpacks and the staff took... more
