Detailed Reviews
After four days in Torino and a week exploring the Piedmont's Hills and Vineyards, a drive south brought us to the Riviera di Ponente and Ventimiglia. Following Rogers directions we headed north to Dolceacqua and the turn off from the road to Rocchetta Nervina up the hill to Casa Villatalla. We were welcomed at the gate and soon made ourselves at ease in the Guest House and the relaxing grounds. Roger and Marina will make you feel right at home. The rooms are comfortable and the breakfasts inviting. A beautiful pool is available on the grounds as is Wi-Fi and a laptop for those e-mail and other travel needs. We received lots of tour tips for the local area. From Menton on the west to Bordighera on the east and the not to be missed villages of Rocchetta Nervina, Isolabona and Apricale. The pizza at a small family run shop in Isolabona is world class and the Farinata a treat.
If your schedule allows, three days is a perfect stay. We enjoyed breakfast conversations with other guests from the UK, France and Italy. This part of Italy is missed by a lot of Americans who rush from the South of France to Tuscany and on to Rome. Slow down and take a look at western Liguria. You will be very surprised by the land, the beaches, the un-crowded cafes, hidden picture postcard villages and the people. Roger and Marina can help expand your list of must explore options. ...................and the Pizza and Farinata!!
We will return.

If you are looking to restore body and spirit this is the place to come for Marina and Roger have created a haven for relaxing in beautiful, natural surroundings with the comfort and warmth of their welcome and care. The views are wonderful as is Marina's food and you can rest assured that your needs will be met. The rooms are clean, tidy, homely with access to either balcony or terraces and garden and all have a bathroom en suite. Should you wish to venture out, the old village of Dolceacqua is just down the road and there are plenty of interesting hill top villages to visit. The national park is not too far away and nor is the seaside town of Monet fame, Bordighera. Another highlight is the pool positioned so you have a view out over the valley and the possible shade of the oak tree. Space to relax and dream, no worries.

We have stayed at this lovely place over the last few years on numerous occasions. For us it is the ideal stop-off place between the North of Italy and the Upper Var/Provence. It is so welcoming and peaceful, we always stay longer than planned, never really wanting to leave. It is a real sanctuary, far away from the madding crowd and a total haven. There it feels as if time stands still and the rest of the world doesn't exist. Best to turn your phone off and it is even more blissful. A great hidey hole, a hidden gem. Saying this it has all the necessary luxuries for a fabulous stay. Airy, spacious rooms with comfortable beds, all with their own terrace or balcony and views to die for, not forgetting the swimming pool. The hosts couldn't be more charming and helpful and Marina is a great cook. The garden is a riot of roses and the scent drifts into the rooms in the morning and evening breeze and in the winter there is a lovely fire burning in the living room for one's return from a day out in the cold. The place is balm for all the senses. And if one has the need for hussle and bussle, Bodighera and Ventimilia are only just around the corner, with Monaco and Nice not too far away either. Can't wait to go back. A truly wonderful place!

Liguria isn't always the area that springs to mind when booking a holiday in Italy, but with the sea and mountains in such close proximity to each other, we wanted to enjoy all that nature has to offer then this is the place. We needed to be brave to negociate the mountain roads, but once we had managed the slighty bum clenching steep narrow drive up to Roger and Marina's gaff we were rewarded with extraordinary views and enough headspace to let our minds escape the realities of life. Casa Villatalla really is away from it all, but with the hosts' intimate knowledge of the area they were able to point us in the direction of anything we wanted to find. We found a warm, friendly cocoon at Villatalla, rooms are comfy and modern, but also quirky and interesting with an eclectic collection of this and that. Breakfast was served on the terrace ( weather permitting, it isn't unremitting sunshine here), Marina's homemade preserves gracing the table. There is a swimming pool, which I am sure is welcome in the height of the summer, however, it was still too cold on our visit to use.
We loved the place and with its easy access to France as well, we had the best of all worlds.

Beautiful gardens with scenic views of the mountains, hilltop villages and valleys. Large swimming pool (with tree frogs at night!). Modern comfortable room with balcony and terrace. We felt very much at home with Marina, Alexia and Celia, who were good company as well as a source of great advice on local places to visit and where to eat. Marina cooked wonderful dinners for us on 2 nights. This is a great base to explore the old villages, and walk into river valleys with cooling swimming holes! It's less than 30 mins from the coast but with no crowds.

My wife and I have been to Casa Villatalla four times in recent years, the latest visit in March. It is both a treat and a retreat going there. The setting is gorgeous, SO peaceful. The perfect escape for us city dwellers...
We always come away recharged and refreshed, which is why we keep going back.
Thank you so much Roger and Marina.
PS. I read someone below talking about it being too remote - it really isn't!!! And that's from a Londoner! It's blissfully peaceful but is only an hour from Nice airport...fantastic.

Nestled in the hills above Dolceacqua, this is a perfect paradise that combines the beauty of the hills with close proximity to the coast.
The villa itself is wonderful - the communal rooms are lovely with interesting artwork and artefacts throughout. The living room has inviting sofas and lots of books covering the local area including fauna and wildlife books to help identify the numerous wild flowers, insects and butterflies. Our room was large and light with a terrace. Breakfast was delicious and a treat every morning. Homemade breads, jams and local fruit tart with plently of fresh juice and pieces of fruit. All enjoyed outside with amazing views and tranquility.
Roger and Marina are fabulous - we received such a warm welcome on arrival and they could not have made us feel more at home. Lovely chats about our plans each day and much appreciated tips.
We thoroughly enjoyed a meal with the other guests at the villa. Marina cooked a delicious meal with good wine - excellent value and highly recommended. We retired to the sitting room for coffees and had a great time chatting with everyone. The laughter filled evening was a credit to the comfortable atmosphere that Roger and Marina work hard to create.
The whole feeling at the villa is extremely personal and by the time we came to leave, we were saying goodbye to friends.

We have just returned home wonderfully relaxed after our fifth enjoyable stay at Casa Villatalla. On every visit we marvel that such an oasis of peace and tranquillity with spectacular views and a genuine “away from it all” feel can be found just a few kilometers (as the crow flies) from the hectic Ligurian coastal road.
The guest house was purpose-built around 2005 for the Anglo-Italian owners, Roger and Marina, who make their guests feel very welcome. They are an easy-going couple who are only too happy to pass on their extensive knowledge of local places of interest, places to eat, and so on. With English, Italian, and French spoken with total fluency, language is never going to be a problem.
The ground floor of the house provides a large open plan area where guests can relax amongst the owners’ very personal selection of furniture and decoration. Bedrooms are upstairs. The two rooms we have stayed in have both been of a good size, with fabulous views down the valley and across to distant hilltop villages, extremely comfortable beds, and good ensuites with effective showers. Unusually for Italy, tea and coffee making facilities are present in the bedrooms. As winter guests, we have always found that more than adequate central heating is provided.
An excellent breakfast is available, with home-made breads and jams on offer. It is self-service, except for coffees/teas, which are prepared to order. From time to time Marina offers evening meals. If you are lucky enough to be staying on one of those days, be sure to experience one of her lovely Ligurian style dinners.
Outdoors, Casa Villatalla has extensive grounds, with several secluded sitting areas – again with superb views. Our visits have all been during winter or spring, so we have not been able to take advantage of the swimming pool or of the large shaded summer terrace.
In every respect, a great place to stay, and we look forward to our next visit.

I have stayed at Villatalla several times over the last four years. One is welcomed as a friend and made to feel at home the moment you arrive. The rooms are comfortable, with all you could want. The food delicious. The setting breathtaking. I return as often as I can.

Beautiful house in an breathtaking area with very lovely hosts!
Wonderful surroundings to find something to see and in the same time it is very peacefull. The house is in the hill, but 25 min to the lovely seafront at Bordighera (where you find good restaurants) and 60 min from Nice. The garden of Villatalla is very beautiful and the rooms are complete.

Dear Josefina, thank you for your enquiry. We are in western Liguria, in the north west of Italy, very near the border with France. We are one hour's drive from Nice. You can find our website if you google "Casa Villatalla". .
Best regards
