We camped for 2 nights at Elk Island National Park and it was really a pleasant change for us mountain camping folk! The lakes were serene and we saw a heron, pipers and even a couple of swans.
There are 6 or 7 hikes to do, and some are 4 or 5 hours each. We did find that the one next to Astotin Lake, because it was paved to make it wheelchair accessible was murder on the legs! We saw beaver dams and evidence of huge trees that they have pulled down!
Driving around the Bison loop, we saw lots of Bison crossing the road in front of us. We even saw them wallowing in the dirt!
Sunsets were amazing!
Hints - do not stay in the RV section of the campground - it was not as picturesque as the other parts! Also, it was quite a hike to the washrooms! Be prepared for showers, as it seemed to rain each evening.
It is really so close to Edmonton. 30 minutes from the city and another 30 minutes or so to drive into the park to the campground.

We just spent four nights camping at Elk Island park. It's a wonderful experience.

There's a nice hike along Moss Lake. Sitting down by the sandy beach is very relaxing.

There were certainly mosquitos but they were tolerable. I would advise Deet if you are travelling here.

The bison are really quite something to see. There is an amphitheatre which may have something informative going on . Also look for moose in the marshes.

Hearing the coyotes at night was really neat as well. The park is great for bird watching as well.

If you are a tenter there are a lot of great walk in sites. The washrooms were kept clean and the park attendants were attentive.
