It's been many years since I visited Exeter - last time was about 15 years ago when I stayed at the Southgate - a new, modern and stunner of a hotel, then a Forte. It had the best fine dining restaurant for miles and rooms where spanking new with everything you could want for. And how it's changed, or not.... more

This hotel is not a 4 star. The room I stayed in needed completely refurbishing. The lights in the room would cause a drag queen to have problems when putting on makeup. The floor was filthy, the bathroom was tired and there were hairs in the bath. No bottles of water in the rooms, hardly any natural light... Ordered a... more

I only stayed at this hotel for one night but I was extremely impressed with all aspects of it. The decor was modern and very chic. The room was immaculate and had air conditioning and wonderful thick curtains, ensuring we got a good night's sleep (as far as possible with a newborn!). I was initially nervous about this trip as... more

We stayed at the Southgate for two nights, before and after our wedding. We were booked into a suite (the Bampfylde) which was well-appointed, with a luxurious bathroom that featured a gigantic stand-alone bathtub. The room was just right, and gave us enough room to spread out in during our pre-wedding chaos and post-wedding decompression. Breakfasts were on the whole... more

We stayed here one night prior to picking up a car for a driving tour of Devon and Cornwall. The room was of adequate size with a large closet and lots of storage space. The mattress was firm and very comfortable (to me anyway, a bit less to my partner). No AC but the windows opened and a small fan was... more

I stayed here with my Husband and two children for a few days in August, The first thing we noticed was the heat, it was very warm in the rooms and the air con didnt work, Small fans were supplied in the rooms but they did not make much difference, There was rubbish sweet papers under the single beds when... more

Reception and Lounge/Bar area has been recently refurbished apparently. It's been done very nicely and I was pleasantly surprised. Had no problems with check in, but was dissappointed when I got to the room. We booked through Superbreak. Their website is a little misleading as I booked a double room thinking I would get one of the two room photos... more

This was the first time at The Southgate. The public areas were well maintained and interestingly designed, but my room was a little tired. I was staying on a corporate rate which was good value for bed and breakfast. Food and beverage service staff were helpful, polite and attentive: the reception staff were less so. more

We booked in for two nights following a disastrous stay in a park in dawlish. The room was executive and was a peaceful haven with air con. The price was excellent considering we had breakfast included as well as unlimited use of the pool. It is ideally situated for going into the city centre on foot and perfectly situated for... more

Generally, the service here was unhelpful and unwelcoming. I was expecting much more from what is supposed to be a 4* hotel. But the service was poor, with no offer of help when we tried to check in 'early' (12pm), only one towel in the room, and no answer from reception on numerous occasions when we called from the room.... more
