Plus point: fabulous location. Car park might be a plus, except that you have to pay for it - and you could get a public car park for a similar price. But how they could have got planning permission for such an ugly building on the cathedral grounds beggars belief! It's better (marginally) inside - possiblly the 70s spiral staircase... more

I stayed a couple of nights at the Wessex Hotel and wasn't particularly impressed. The rooms are pretty tired and the food served in the restaurant wasn’t anything fantastic. The location is good so at least it’s not far to go out for food and the staff are pleasant enough however the cost quoted (for me at least) didn’t include breakfast... more

Stayed at the Wessex for Friday and Saturday night. Arrived at around 9.30pm obviously too late for dinner so decided to have a drink in the bar. Found the barman to be quite abrupt and not very happy in his job. Sat dowm for a chat and at 10.50, even though there were quite a few people in the bar... more

Have stayed here twice, once for two nights in August and secondly for a single night in September. Picked here as it wasn't too far from where our son is living in Gosport. Good points are that it's very central and has lovely views of the cathedral. Rooms were clean and comfy. Got a really cheap price of £50 including... more

Have just returned from a one night stay at this hotel. It was booked by the friends that we travelled with and by all accounts was the "last" place with any rooms left available! When we arrived the car park guy instructed us to park across 2 cars in the very tight carpark and leave the keys with him in... more

We booked this hotel via lastminute as a "4 star secret hotel". Found staff rude, service awful. The rooms were dated, stank of old socks and needed a much needed revamp. Our double bed was made up of 2 singles stuck together- had an awful night's sleep. The bath products had consistency of water and the hairdryer and TV belonged... more

My wife and I have just had two nights at the Mercure Wessex at Winchester in order to visit the Southampton boat show. We had asked on the booking for a quiet room overlooking the Cathedral. The room (111) was very good, quiet and gave a beautiful view of the Cathedral only 100 yards away. Yes the wallpaper had a... more

The only thing missing from this hotel is Basil Fawlty. On arrival i was behind a chap who had booked an executive room which he could not enter as it was still being cleaned (at 7:30pm?). I eventually was given my key which after several failed attempts to enter my room; the door was opened by a startled occupant! When... more
