I spent 18 nights at the Wessex Winchester on business. The hotel is located in the heart of Winchester. It is a great jumping off point to central and southern England. The rooms are small but clean and the beds are very comfortable. There are not many amenities to take advantage of at the hotel. There is plenty of common... more

I stay in a lot of hotels, but this is my very favourite and I return as often as I can. It's got a faboulous location in central Winchester, right alongside the Cathedral. It has a wonderful John Piper stained glass panel in the lobby. Although it's clearly been made over several times, and extended, it manages to keep the... more

The location and staff were great and the food decent. But the hotel is woefully neglected. The carpet in the first room we were in was literally in a tatters. I have never seen a property that deteriorated! Mercure charged me for an upgrade to get out of that room. But the other rooms are not that much better. Just... more

I stayed here from one night with my partner as we had been to Southampton to pick up my new car and didn't want to drive all that way and back in one day. We chose the Mercure purely on its location and price, and didn’t actually pay too much attention to the hotel when we booked, so were not... more

I booked 11 rooms with the Wessex for my family back in February 2008 and my son was due to be married at the Cathedral on Aug 2nd. It was a coming home for him having been a chorister at the Cathedral and where better to stay, but the Wessex. I went in 4 times between February and August confirming... more

We arrived with no problem locating the hotel and parked directly in front. Once inside at the desk we were greeted by a very friendly staff member that was actually from Orlando as we were. He was very helpful as it was late afternoon and we were looking for someplace to have lunch and he directed us to the city... more

I stayed at the "new wing" of the hotel. The rooms are a good size, but somewhat rundown. Two points against: 1. I found hair from the previous occupant in the shower. 2. The iron I was given had burnt plastic on it, so it ruined my shirt. The staff didn't even apologize. There are not many options for staying... more

A 60s tasteless exterior in a great setting. Room was everything you would expect from a hotel, and for the price ,maybe more. Dining room staff seem to be exclusively Polish but cheerful and polite serving a great breakfast .(no buffet rubbish here) No need to dine in the hotel as dozens of classy restaurants within a few minutes walk.... more
