Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The very best standards maintained here. Very clean, cosy and peaceful en suite room. Superb range of breakfast options. Good off-street parking. 10 minute walk to a Greene King pub and 15 minutes walk into Hereford. No hesitation in recommending Somerville House.

Our overnight stay in this lovely b&b was one of the best Ive ever had. It is just outside Hereford city centre and is in a quiet location. Steve and Sheila were great hosts and they were always on hand. Our room was very comfortable and had absolutely everything you would need for your stay. Fresh milk was a nice touch. The beds are soo comfortable and we had a view of the cathedral from our window. Breakfast was delicious and set us up for the day. Thanks again for a great stay.

We stayed here with 2 other couples for a long weekend . Would not hesitate to recommend- lovely breakfast. Rooms very clean . The break was made by the superb hosts - nothing is too much trouble. A friend had a birthday and they helped us to surprise him with a bottle of fizz !

We stayed here along with our extended family for a family wedding. Our room was beautiful, comfy and looked out over the garden. Sheila & Steve made us extremely welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Steve cooks a brill breakfast, very welcome after a night out partying. We stayed for 3 nights and will definitely return when we next visit Hereford. Thank you!

Despite the lovely location snd nicely appointed house inside plus friendly staff - the bed in room 6 was a disaster. At both sides for the king bed you sank into a trough with hard bumps on the bottom. Not only was it uncomfortable disrupting our sleep but I ended up with a bad back for two days. It is a great shame that this 5 star establishment should not check the mattresses to ensure a good night’s sleep. Hopefully for others who stay they will not have a similar problem. Clearly as a good bed is essential in a B&B this needs addressing. I can only assign 1 star given this issue.

Response from Sheila Cadd, Owner at Somerville House
Responded 20 Dec 2023
Hello Allan, As we said in our email to you yesterday, we were sorry to learn the bed was uncomfortable for you and gave you a bad back after your one night stay. Nobody has complained about it before but we said we would look into it. We started this morning by asking the current guests how they slept and the response was "the the bed was so comfy they nearly went back to sleep again". We will continue to ask guests their opinion of that mattress and like I said we will use that room ourselves over the festive period and see what we think. The mattress topper is a very thick one. Its very difficult to always get the ideal for every guest as its a very individual thing. The mattresses do get checked as the housekeepers actually vacuum them but I will check for the hard bumps you mention at the bottom. We are always happy to change mattresses if it is needed. Steve was happy to carry your very large case to the second floor but you did bring that down yourself without asking for help again. I am sure that didn't help your bad back. We are pleased we got some things right for you as you gave us 5 star for service. Kind regards Sheila & Steve

I booked through Expedia and it was billed as a small double. On arrival I was greeted by the owners and booked in, parking on site. My room was on the first floor at the back with wonderful far reaching views of Hereford Cathedral and beyond. The room was well appointed with en-suite providing a large walk in shower with toiletries. The room provided tea and coffee, a mini fridge which I could store my complimentary cute bottle of milk, provided on arrival. There was an iron and board and TV. The bed was extremely comfortable. The Breakfast menu was extensive with a variety of hot and cold options. The hotel was situated just outside the city centre to be quiet but not too far to visit. The owner was very helpful with directions to the cathedral and where I could park. I would recommend the Somerville for a stay in Hereford.

Best b&b ever! We enjoyed our stay at Somerville House so much that we returned a week later on our way home from North Wales! It was perfect! It’s a Victorian house beautifully decorated with high ceilings and original features. Sheila and Steve gave us such a warm friendly welcome. Our spacious room was on the first floor and was immaculately clean. Crisp white linen bedding and a super comfy king sized bed. Quiet at night so slept really well. En-suite was spotless with a large walk-in shower. Lots of little extras like tea & coffee in room with fresh milk available and a mini-bar. Breakfast was fantastic with a choice of fresh fruit salad, grapefruit, prunes, etc, and the cooked food (by Steve) was delicious too. It was promptly served by Shelia with her winning smile! There’s a spacious ‘guests only’ lounge but we didn’t have time to enjoy it. Somerville House was easy to find with free parking!

From the location and cleanliness of the House, it was perfect. the breakfast was brilliant with exceptional choice of fruits, cereals etc. and of course a full English breakfast in any quantity or item choice you wished for. Cannot give a 5 star though as our break was marred by being in the rooms in the eaves with 6 flights of stairs to manage. In our room 6, head hitting was the norm on the window side and I'm only 5ft2in. I would add at this stage that we are in our 70's and so were the friends in room 7 we travelled with. We had a superking bed which was great but just had to be careful getting out of it on one side!! Not sure if the cost of the rooms reflected the size and location but would have gladly paid more for a lower floor but, although booked early in the year, these must have already been allocated?
