Tend to agree with more recent reviewers. Great location - and the local pub is excellent (if a little pricey) - but the Eltermere really needs to up the ante. My room was old-fashioned, musty (the chest of drawers smelled straightforwardly damp) and very much in need of renovation. What particularly surprised me, considering the fuss made on the hotel's... more

The hotel is in a fantastic location and has some great views, with a nice pub (the Britannia) within easy walking distance. Once inside, however, it is clear that very little has changed in the last few decades (with the possible exception of the wireless internet) - check out the photo gallery on the website for further evidence. The beautiful... more

More guest house than country house hotel, this a very regimented establishment with throw backs to 50s land ladies. The breakfast is served late so if you want an early start on the fells - forget it. Dinner is at seven prompt and guests are asked to gather in the bar or reception areas awaiting to be called in, The... more

We visited this old country house for a last minute birthday treat in November. We got the last room in the place and although it had not yet been refurbished it was warm and very spacious and the view was fabulous. The welcome was warm and the open fire was always lit. Tea and coffee were available in the lounge... more

The Location of this hotel is very good stunning views, our room was not a superior one so was a little small. The main grip was no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. I like a cuppa when I wake up and especially when away as I am sure most people do. I am not inclined to having to trudge... more

This hotel is in a great location with superb views and away from the crowds and the noise. Perfect for hikers and cyclists who visit this area for the countryside. The bedroom was basic but very clean, warm and had a comfortable bed. The staff were all very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome as soon as... more

My husband and I, our 3yr old and 1yr old arrived after a horrendous journey to be warmly greeted and well looked after! The food and accomodation were excellent. There was plenty of space for an extra bed and a travel cot in our room and the 5 course meals were as good as any restaturant. And the waiting staff... more

We stayed here in autumn 2005 for one night, booked at short notice and it wasn't cheap so we were expecting something above average. The hotel is in a lovely position and the communal areas were pleasant enough but the bedroom was very disappointing. I suspect we had the last and consequently least well-appointed room in the hotel, as looking... more

I stayed here in October of 2005 with my boyfriend. we had a wonderful three day break and will certainly be going back. Our room was comfortable, but we could see that much redecorating was happening throughout under the new ownership. The views were breathtaking and the food was excellent. All the staff were very friendly and it felt like... more

Beware of booking this hotel on the net. Instead of getting a cheaper rate - you are likely to be charged more than what you would be charged if you turned up at the door. Certainly the prices in the leaflet 'on the gate' were far cheaper than what I paid. Beware also of booking a superior room with "lake,... more

We have no record of anyone from Australia staying during this time or indeed anyone. We were closed for redecoration from 28th November 2004 through to 4th December!!!
