Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Arrived at the hotel from Scotland, we were on holiday with another couple. The hotel was very tired with dirty carpets in the communal areas. The rooms were very dated. The soft furnishings such as the chairs actually smelt bad and the smell lingered on my clothes. The carpets in the room were old and worn. However, the bathroom in the room was moden and was the only saving grace. We ventured down to the dining area for dinner, the ambience was zero but the staff were friendly and welcoming. However this did not make up for uncovered sticky tables, cutlery with paper napkins so tightly stuck to them. The food was average and over priced for what it was. Really disappointed with the facilities and wear and tear. It looked and felt like something out of the 80s. The owners really do need to look into this and plan a major refurb. The receptionist did inform us this was due to be done in 2025. We paid £190 per room.. really not value for money especially in the shabby condition. Breakfast was very average. The staff tried their best to make it welcoming, especially Jack. But there was obviously some problem in the kitchen and our cooked breakfast took over 30 mins to arrive and that was after we promoted the waiter. I do feel bad to have to write such a bad review as we had high expectations for a 4 star hotel.. I would definitely not book this hotel again which was over priced, not clean and food being below average.

Horrible stay!!!! Rooms dated with curtains falling off the rails and mould in the windowsill….couldn’t believe that the standard of the hotel had such rooms to offer !!!!! Really a health and safety risk and should he investigated. Dining room in a bad condition and generally the whole hotel run down, such a decline from when we visited in 2017.

We stayed in Grasmere recently and chose to eat at the Wordsworth on the Saturday evening. The decor is very dated and agree with other reviewers that the hotel is looking tired. The food was disappointing and we ate as quickly as possible so we could leave. A positive was the friendly staff, although some of them did appear to be under a lot of pressure that evening. Hope one of the previous reviews is correct and the hotel is due a refurb.

The restaurant in the evening is no better than a pub. It has lost its charm so might as well go to a pub. The Hotel was very clean and we will stay again but eat out. The hotel is in good condition and well looked after.

We took advantage of an offer to stay dinner bed and breakfast and really enjoyed our two night stay. Good value and excellent professional service. The bus stop for the main bus service through the Lakes was across the road from the Hotel so we did not have to use our car. We will use this Hotel again for any future stays in the Lakes.

We had a two day break at the Wordsworth hotel on a Winter break package. The offer enabled us to have an evening meal to the value of £26 per person per night. We found this to be good value although the drinks to accompany were expensive. The food at breakfast and dinner was very good. The hotel is very comfortable and clean but have to agree that it is looking tired. I rang the hotel to book and was not informed that there was no longer a swimming pool. I think this information should be given as I specifically booked it for this reason. All the staff are very friendly and work hard. Check your invoice on leaving as there were some drinks on there which we hadn’t had. The receptionist sorted it though.

Stayed here for my 30th birthday and it was idyllic! We stayed in a cosy double and it was a lovely room with a lovely window seat for reading my book, plug sockets in appropriate spaces, good mirrors and a cosy bed! Breakfast was brilliant with fabulous service and great options. Food on an evening was also brilliant! Staff were very welcoming and attentive! I would love to return!

Not what it was sadly. Staff still excellent and food still good but the hotel is looking tired and there are plans afoot for a big closure and refurbishments. Really disappointed that the pool and spa have been decommissioned as this was a big attraction for many.
