Trying to find accommodation for four in Hawkshead on a holiday weekend was always going to be difficult and when we booked the YHA we werent expecting luxury. The drive through the narrow lake district roads was magic and the YHA is in a fantastic position overlooking the läke but the building is old and shabby and shows no resemblence to the internet photo which we were told by the staff is an example of other local buildings. We had a 4 bed room, 2 old creaky bunks with thin matresses and ripped sheets. The shared washing facilities were cramped and damp and dark and undesirable. There was a satisfactory shared kitchen and dining area which was a great bonus. OK, you dont expect the ritz but at over 100 pound per night, we think we could have done better. Next time we will look a bit harder for a BandB. Compared to the other places we have stayed, this was not good value for money. Despite all this, Hawkshead, Coniston and the Lakes in general have been a highlight of our travels... more
