My wife and I have just spent 4 days in the Lake District staying in accomodation in Hawkshead. On our first evening we walked into the village and out of the 4 public houses we chose to eat at the Red Lion. The food was fresh, came piping hot, good portions and tasty. It was so good we decided to... more

My partner and I spend a lot of time in the the village and was looking for somewhere to stay that is dog friendly. The new owners of the Red Lion were very friendly and welcoming. Our room was at the side of the pub with easy access out the fire escape which made life easier with the dog and... more

Wrote a review on this hotel which has seemed to have disappeared. Forget comments pre-new owners who arrived early 2009. We found this place excellent, good reasonably priced fresh/home cooked food, excellent breakfasts and a friendly staff and locals. If you want gold plated taps, overpriced food and bland rooms go to a five star hotel and pay through the nose.... more

We had a pleasant stay here over easter but the decor is seriously tired and in need of updating. The dining room is dark and a little creepy but the main pub, though small is buzzy and the food was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful but I think for the money there are probably more charming and cosier... more

This is a lovely hotel, right in the centre of this small historic village. Hotel is cosy, staff are friendly and keen to help. Occasional entertainment and reasonably priced. It is also dog and child friendly, good food and ales too!! more

Visited in October 2008. Called in at lunch time for a bite and a Pint. Ordered Ham Sandwiches and Chips. After having paid, were later told chips were not available. Some story about gas cookers being off due to gas leak. Were offerred a packet of crisps as an alternative - what a cheek. A cash refund would have been... more

New owners have created an ambience in their pub for others to aspire to. Great pub food menu, perfect after a day in the hills, smashing breakfasts, well kept real ale, sensible prices, comfortable bed, powerful showers, clean rooms - what more could you ask for?? We will be back.......... :) more

Just returned from five night stay. Booked mainly because of location in lovely traditional Lakeland village. On arrival we were greeted by friendly helpful staff. The accommodation was clean, warm and comfortable and the food was well prepared and served promptly, taking our preferences into consideration. The accommodation has retained the feel of a 15th Century Inn whilst adding some... more

Spent Good Friday at this establishment, we were booked in for three nights over Easter but found it so bad we left after the first night. It is nothing like it appears on the website, our room was on the front of the hotel and so small you couldn't swing a cat, the bathroom(?) was even smaller, just a portion... more
