My wife and I stayed at this B&B on the first night of our recent holiday en route to the Outer Hebrides. We drove up from South Hertfordshire via the busy M1 and M6 encountering car problems en route. When we arrived, the "hostess" made an very unwelcoming comment about the fact that we were late. When we answered why,... more

From time to time customers ask me about the beneficial effects of drinking herbal teas. Not being an expert on such matters I always relate the following tale: Sometime ago we had an extremely awkward guest staying. The final words from the guest’s wife as they left the building were ‘I’m so sorry; he does this everywhere we go’. We...

My partner and I stayed at this bb for an overnight stay and couldn't fault the place. We paid £44 because their was only a single room available, but the room had a four foot very comfortable bed so it was fine. The shower was brilliant and just what the doctor ordered after a long walk. I don't think we... more

Thank you for your kind comments. It is always a pleasure having appreciative people staying with us. If only all customers were as pleasant as yourselves! I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us even though your room was the smallest in the house. We do try to offer value for money at all times. Pleased you enjoyed...

Don't know if I should write this review because I don't want this place to get so busy I can't get in. I know others have commented on the breakfasts but they are really superb. I guarantee you wont find a bigger choice in hotels costing 10 times the price. Everything is home made - just don't know how they... more

Thank you very much for your comments. We take a lot of pride in our breakfast menu. It is definitely our unique selling point. We find food buffs travel far and wide to try our selection of home made dishes. We will however endeavour to keep 'the secret' so that will be able to keep visiting us. Thanks once again.

Absolutely great! A very special place. All the staff I met were friendly and pleasant and the Proprietor was particularly nice and helpful with me. The room was lovely, as clean and pleasant as anywhere I've stayed and I have travelled quite a lot. I particularly appreciated the strict no smoking as it meant the room was clean and fresh.... more

Thank you for your kind words. The majority of our staff have been with us for many years and it is good to know that their hard work and dedication is appreciated. St John’s Lodge was one of the first guest houses in the area to become ‘smoke free’. That was over ten years ago when we first took over...

After trying to book the beautiful Waterhead Hotel, and searching for weeks on the internet for somewhere decent to stay in Windermere, we gave up, and decided to go book this place, as we were short of time. Upon entering the B&B in the pouring rain, we expected at least a smile and nice welcome, instead, we were greeted with... more

It may surprise these customers to know that they are exactly the type of guests we don’t want at St John’s Lodge i.e. smokers who wish to party until the early hours and then disturb other guests as they return. Unfortunately these customers had no regard for anybody else but themselves. Hint – ‘Exclusively for non- smokers’ means we do...

Cheap and cheerful! Great value for money. We have stayed twice this year. We are used to staying in very up market accomodation but for our breaks in Windermere our aim was lots of walking, eating out and sight seeing ,so our motivation for choosing St Johns was we just wanted a comfy bed and a good hearty breakfast ! And... more

Thank you for your kind comments. We always appreciate constructive criticism. We are now offering an even greater choice of vegetarian and vegan breakfasts as well as more gluten free options. I believe that we offer the best value for money and the largest choice of breakfast menu in Cumbria. We look forward to seeing you again.

The location of this hotel is great, within walking distance of Windermere village. The staff were pleasent, the rooms were basic but clean and good value. The breakfasts were excellent, catering extensively for vegetarians and vegans, definitely the most appealing feature of the b&b. I tried something different on every morning! Overall, the bed and breakfast was of average standard... more

Thank you for your feedback. All our vegetarian food is homemade on the premises by our small team of dedicated chefs. We also offer a good selection of home made breads, some gluten free. We always enjoy catering for people like yourselves who appreciate quality food.

The best feature about this B&B is the location as it is on the main road between Bowness & Windmere. As soon as we arrived we were greeted not in the usual personal manner you expect from a B&B, "how was your drive", etc, but a full run down of all the rules. Don't park here, no entering after this... more

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We state quite clearly on all our web site entries that St John's Lodge caters exclusively for non-smiking adults. We also state that we restrict access to the building after 12.30 at night. The majority of our customers (of which 80% return each year) book with us because of this. They can...
