I enjoyed my stay at the Royal York. Bags of character and a good location. Unfortunately the hotel could do with a refurb. Carpets are pretty bad as soon as you leave the foye. The room we were given was tiny and without a view. The hotel generally looked dated, tired decor, but had too high an opinion of itself. After a major row we were given a bigger room but with old decor - about 1980 I'd say. Reception staff uncaring. The breakfast was good though. more

Typical Victorian railway hotel with emphasis on grand public areas and substandard rooms. No air conditioning and no ventilation so in the summer our cramped room (a 'superior' garden room) was impossibly hot and stuffy - we had to prop the door open to try to get some air in.
