Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On their website the owners claim "The family-friendly Hedley House Hotel in York really does tick all the boxes" This claim by the family who own and manage the hotel is absolutely spot-on! Speaking to staff on the telephone before our visit gave me a good feeling; the welcome was second to none. Our bedroom was tastefully furnished and the modern en-suite had walk in shower. The hotel is immaculately clean with what appears to be a lot of new carpets and furniture. Pre-ordering dinner in the morning and breakfast the night before (with a tick list in the bedroom) ensures that food is freshly cooked to order, at a time to suit guests, of high quality and reasonably priced. I'm always reticent to give high praise to any hotel because it could become too popular and difficult to book....but I'll risk it in this case.....they deserve it!

The room was really clean, the bed was large and comfortable, the staff were all very helpful, nothing was to much trouble, the breakfast was tasty and filling with plenty of choice, a good location, only a short walk to The Shambles, we will definitely visit again

We have stayed at Hedley house more than a dozen times and it’s a fantastic family run hotel where the staff go above and beyond to make the stay perfect. The rooms are always immaculately prepared, breakfasts are excellent and the hotel has great facilities including the large hot tub, ample parking with electric charge points and a cosy lounge bar, always with a welcoming smile. One of the reasons we love the hotel it’s its location. You are only a couple of minutes stroll to the York Walls and Minster, the River is right at the bottom of the road, and there are lots of local amenities right on the doorstep. We will return to Hedley house soon, without a doubt. Keep up the good work.

I visited as part of a group of ten for a hen weekend. I had pre-booked a mix of three bedroom and two bedroom rooms with breakfast and use of one of the dining rooms for one of our weekend activities. Communication ahead of our visit was great and I felt really reassured our visit would be good. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. The rooms were all really good sizes and maintained to a high standard. All of our rooms were located in the same area and I was concerned about noise (disturbing my by members of the group!) but I couldn't hear anything within the room as/when people came back at night. Breakfast was delicious and we could come down whenever we were ready and the bar was well stocked and reasonably priced. We were able to use one of the dining rooms for our perfume making class and this was above and beyond and saved us having to find somewhere elsewhere in York to host us. The added bonus of a gym, hot tub and car parking also cannot be underestimated. I enjoyed it so much I am staying again before Christmas when my husband and I visit York.

My husband and I stayed here for our second wedding anniversary for 4 nights. We stayed in the St. Peters apartment which was on the ground floor. The apartment was pretty large with an on suite bathroom and a small kitchenette. It was a little old fashioned in style, and the bathroom could do with a refurb as the ceiling was coming away in places due to damp / water marks. My husband and I are both tall, and the ceiling in the bathroom is extremely low, so this was a little claustrophobic for us when having showers. Another issue for my husband was that he kept hitting his head on the extractor hood in the kitchenette -- there is no door on the kitchenette and the extractor hood sticks out past the door frame. My husband is 6ft 6" and must have hit his head on the corner of this at least x 5 times; this is definitely a bit of a health and safety concern. Our other issue during our stay was noise. We could hear everything outside our room; people going up and down the stairs, doors opening and closing, other guests in their room (what sounded like snoring), as well as renovation noises. We were disappointed that we weren't told they were renovating, as the noise was an issue for us. I would suggest maybe providing guests with ear plugs for their stays to help with this issue. We did purchase some for these reasons. You do have to pre-book a car parking space, and this costs extra -- there is a charge per night. I'm not sure why free parking isn't provided for paying guests. The Hotel is in a prime location and is only a 5 - 10 minute walk from the City Centre. The area surrounding the hotel is quiet and not too busy. If you don't want to stay directly in the City Centre and would like somewhere a little less busy, then this would be perfect. There is a bar in the reception area and two rooms for eating. There was no Chef available for the first couple of nights during our stay, but this wasn't an issue for us as we ate out or made use of the kitchen in our room. There is WiFi in the hotel; it wasn't the best in the apartment we stayed in and found it improved after 10.30 pm. Overall, despite the few issues with the apartment, we would stay here again, though it likely wouldn't be our first choice. We would definitely ask for a different room if we were to stay here again.

Stayed to visit family nearby and location was also perfect for walking into the city. Staff were all friendly and helpful, breakfasts were delicious, can’t comment on evening dinner as chef’s day off the 2 nights we stayed but that wasn’t a problem for us. Would definitely choose Hedley House for future trips to visit family. Would say it is more of a guest house than a hotel but that is not a criticism in any way. Our only criticism would be the £14 per day parking charge to stay in the hotel’s small car park. We don’t object to a parking fee but feel this was a little steep.
