Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was a real home from home. Very well equipped with everything you needed and spotlessly clean. Comfy bed - had a great nights sleep no noise at all. Situated in a very nice area and about a 10 minute walk to the river and then another 10 minute walk to Minster area but didn't seem that long as plenty places to see on the way. We walked out in the evening and got an uber home which worked out about £6 from near the Minster. Would definitely stay here again - was perfect for our needs

Just returned from two night stay. As usual when booking anywhere i look at tripadvisor reviews. so after going on website i booked stay. We arrived to be greeted by owner who took us round property explaining everything and about local area. The apartment was very well equipped and also a welcome pack in fridge. Everything was spotless including the white fluffy pillows. No sign of the yellow pillows.

Pillows were yellow, badly stained! Despite ringing mobile and ring doorbell, no one responded for some while! The following day other guests were also kept waiting so long, I invited them to use our facilities! My family visited and were disgusted at how the manager spoke to me, after I offered to strip the beds, something I usually do when staying anywhere, to save housekeeping time!

I refer to the recent review, and offer my comments: Your Review “There was no one to meet us, despite letting her know arrival time, ringing the mobile phone a couple of times and the ring doorbell. A German couple waited outside so long, we offered them the use of our toilet. Again, we all rung the mobile and ring doorbell several times! My daughters were upset at the ‘curt’ way I was spoken to by the owner, when I’d offered to strip the beds for housekeeping, like I always do! The pillows were disgustingly yellow with no pillow protectors. We were too afraid to look at the mattresses 😢, despite paying nearly £150 p.n.” I would comment as follows: ~ The German couple (PeterJ, Booking.com), had arrived 2 hours early. They then phoned me in London to tell me. I told them to ring Lilian’s Apt (No.3), however, Lilian was in Apt No. 1 discussing a new boiler with a Gas Fitter/Plumber. The German guests were in no way upset just anxious that they had arrived 2 hours early, as can be appreciated! I spoke to them at some length. They loved the apartment and their stay (see their review on B.com!). ~ Our mattresses (and beds) are brand new (if you wish I will send you a copy of the receipts). I’m not sure of the pillows (I am currently in London), but you will note from the following booking from Hannah, GB, Booking.com a few days prior, that she loved the apartment and of course Lilian! This is typical of our reviews. You are welcome to see this review on Booking.com, (12th March 2023), as well as 100’s of others (and of course those on Expedia!). ~ We have been in business over 10 years and have never had any problem such as you seek to imply, and with many National awards, and 1000’s of positive reviews! ~ As experienced operators, I do think that you are very much something of the issue here with your attitude. ~ For example, your 3-day stay was £364.49. Saturday was £148.49, and Sunday and Monday were £108 per night. This is very nearly £100.00 difference from what you stated to Expedia. There was also a £30 per night per adult for the extra adult stay - as you were pre-informed. ~ Your original booking was for 2 adults and 2 children under 16, and this was chopped and changed repeatedly. Your children are not under 16. Children under 16 of course stay free. Hannah, GB review (B.com) “The apartment was very clean, tidy and spacious. Lilian was very welcoming showed us where everything was and how to work things gave us directions could contact her at any point if needed. Lovely touch of fresh milk, eggs and bread for breakfast the following morning. Within the apartment, there is already coffee, tea and sugar and also a coffee pod machine. Equipped with washing machine and dishwasher. The bed was super comfy even checked where the pillows were from before I left as I now want to purchase some (Marks & Spencer). The location was perfect as you are a 10-minute walk from York town centre or a few pounds in an Uber that picks you up from right outside. Lilian provided us with a map and marked exactly where we were and marked directions on how to get into the town centre. Excellent value for money compared to the cost of hotels in York. You have access to free Wi-Fi in the apartment also with a range of leaflets for different attractions in York. Would definitely stay here again if we were to visit York. Thanks, Lilian!”

Second time we have stayed. Well located within 5-7 mins walk of Michelgate. Highly unusual to find somewhere with free parking this close to York. You can walk to everything so easily from here. The apartment is like a home from home. Plenty of towels, welcome pack( milk, eggs, bread, teabags, butter and jams). Lots of welcome touches like shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, well equipped kitchen including small dishwasher and washing machine. Generous sized lounge and dinning room. It was very clean when we arrived and well presented. Booking direct with owner was easy to do and they are quick in responding to any questions. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this apartment. We stayed in apartment 2-there are two apartments upstairs of similar size.

Fantastic, clean well equipped accommodation. Excellent location , just a short stroll into the city centre. The hosts were really friendly and accommodating. Allowed us to park our car in advance of our check in time and also met us to let us have a key early too. The apartment was modern and comfortable, like a home from home. Super comfy beds. We weren’t expecting any food provisions and were really grateful and pleasantly surprised to find tea, coffeee, milk, bread, jam butter and eggs, so we could make a breakfast in the morning. We had a fabulous stay

My wife and I stayed here for three nights over school half term. We were delighted when we arrived to see how nice the apartment was. Everything was clean and there was everything we could need for our stay. The bed was huge, which was a relief as the last few B&Bs we have stayed in have had the most basic of double beds and we struggled to sleep. Not a problem with that here. What really made the apartment was the little touches throughout, such as the Nespresso machine with capsules provided, the eggs, bread, milk and butter and loads of other things including stuff we didn't need but it was nice to see, such as a load of picnic equipment in case we'd wanted to take a picnic in a park (not this time as it rained for our whole stay!) The location of the apartment was excellent, as it was only a ten minute walk to the centre and 15-20 minutes to most things you'd want to go to for a holiday. The only thing I would say was a minor issue was how cold it got during the night. I guess this comes down to the type of house that it is in and there's not too much to be done about that, other than jump up out of bed and pump up the heating or grab the extra blankets or duvets that were squirrelled about the apartment. Highly recommended and we will definitely go there again if we visit York.

We had a great stay at Popular House Apartments. Lilian was incredibly friendly and helpful. The apartment was large, spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. I would definitely stay again and will be recommending it to family and friends who want to stay in York.
