My partner and I came to York for a birthday two-night stay, and we booked the Belfry Suite, room 14, as a treat. The suite itself is spacious horizontally, but it does feel rather more claustrophobic than it looks in photos. Taller guests would struggle to stand upright! The freestanding bath is beautiful, the view of the Minster is breathtaking, and the lounge is well equipped, but there are a few things to note regarding this suite: - it is very warm up there, even in winter, and it is nearly impossible to regulate the temperature. - the lighting is terrible (especially for make up, so be warned), and there is a spotlight directly above the bed that seems to be there simply to induce headaches. - the mattress is very soft, to the point where there is very little support. - a lot of the furniture seems to be there as set-dressing, so for form over function. The restaurant service, I’m sad to say, was spotty at best. We ate there on our first night, and it took 30 mins for someone to take our drinks orders. We had intended to order starters and desserts, but after waiting so long we went straight to mains, and overall we were there 90 mins. We decided not to have dessert. Breakfast service was hit and miss too - the first morning, beans were missing from the ‘Yorkshire Breakfast’ (as well as a milk jug and teaspoons for the table). The second morning, my partner ordered the ‘Black Pudding Hash’, and the food that arrived was laughable. It was oven cooked fries with a huge amount of chopped up black pudding on top, and two fried eggs. Not a hash at all. Realistically, the reasons to stay here are the history, and location of the inn. I’m thankful to have been on the top floor and therefore avoided the noise reported on lower floors, and having a bath with a view of the Minster was truly special. I will also say that the suite was spotlessly clean, albeit a little tired. A final thing to note for future guests - to get to the suite, you will need to climb three sets of stairs, including a very steep set in the suite itself.…
