If you want to pay budget prices, you need to expect budget accommodations. The Buttery has no lift, and reception is up a flight of steep stairs. My room (206) was up yet another flight. It was small, sparsely decorated, with dirty smudges on the walls in places. The bathroom was a SMALL cubicle shower with a toilet wedged in,... More

This was the worst hotel I've stayed at in Great Britain. The visit begins with a long flight of steps that one must climb, dragging luggage with you since there is no where other than the street to "park" it while you make your way up to the registration alcove, which is located above the storefront (second floor to Americans--first... I stayed at The Buttery in a deluxe double room whilst on a conference in Oxford. The Hotel is very central and conveniently located. The rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms basic but light and roomy by English standards. Breakfasts were served in the cafe downstairs, good coffee and fantastic croissants. The only down side was the noise on the... More

We didn't really enjoy our stay at The Buttery Hotel. The thing that bothered me alot was the cleanliness of the hotel, I had to write a note for the housekeeping in order to change the towels! It is very noisy you can hear others talking in adjacent rooms. Breakfast was served very early, until 9:00 am. However, I admit... More

Nice little boutique hotel. By no means five star but very solid and well located just around the corner from the main shopping strip. Breakfast is average English fare but adequate and there are a few choices. Staff very friendly and helpful. Cost was very good for the centre of Oxford.

It's a shame we have to be negative about this hotel, especially as the staff at reception were pleasant and courteous and the breakfasts were good - and it's a very convenient location in the city. The problem was noise from other guests returning late - sometimes very late - and having no conscious regard for other guests. Noise meaning... More

I regularly visit Oxford for the libraries and usually stay in accommodation provided for students. This time everywhere was booked up and I tried the Buttery, which was slightly more expensive, but compares very favourably with many central B&Bs. The Buttery couldn't be better placed - a few steps from the Bodleian and right in the middle of the university... More

I have eaten breakfast on 2 occasions with colleagues whilst working in Oxford. Lovely fresh food, good service and nice surroundings. The one thing I think would improve the breakfast experience would be to have eggs other than scrambled. A thought perhaps forthright owners? Highly recommended!

My friend and I stayed three nights at the Buttery. The location is excellent. My room was a "deluxe double" (Rm 101) on the first floor (which is the second floor if you're American). The room was a good size - and had a nice bathroom with tub and shower. Everything was nice and clean. The bed was very comfortable.... More
