after reading some reviews im glad to see i went to this hotel as it was getting a face lift! talked to the nice lady behind reception called angela and she told me that all the rooms will be getting done. the reception area and bar area were bright and really enjoyed my lunch in the bar while i waited... more

We booked this dump via the Booking.com website. My review to them has not been posted on the Customer Review page. The photographs depicted the ground floor reception, bar and other facilites that looked good and were accurate. The bedroom photographs showed a spacious room. Our room was cramped with a double bed shoehorned into a corner. The window did... more

I selected this hotel by chance, without having read any previous reviews. It is made up of a traditional terraced building on a busy road famed for its nightlife. Access to the city centre is by bus from a stop just accross from the hotel, and there is a Metro station only 5 minutes walk away. The hotel is close... more

Our stay last weekend at the Cairn Hotel was a wholly disappointing experience. First the plus points - the breakfasts are good and the hotel is ideally placed for the nightlife on Osborne Road. Now the down side: Apart from the Reception area, the hotel is shabby, dirty and desperately in need of renovation. Our room (307) was particularly tiny,... more

We stayed over the sunday night of the Great North run as couldn't get in to our usual place. Had booked a double but had to accept a twin. the room was small and shabby, wallpaper was marked and dirty. the room smelled damp. When I opened the kettle to fill it there was a big lump of mould floating in... more

We stayed here over the Great North run weekend and were left very disapointed. The hotel had charged us more than double the normal rate (£200) for the weekend. We would expect some mark up at such a busy time, but more than double was shocking. The hotel wasnt worth the original rate, never mind the higher one. This was... more

Management response from

The hotel group has a standard cancellation policy for peak dates which is identical to the policies that most hotel groups have. I would like to state that your comments on tripadvisor stating that the hotel is running a scam are completely untrue as the hotel policy was clearly stated to you when you were trying to make a booking...

Stayed at this Hotel for two nights and found the staff very friendly and helpfull. Room was very clean but could maybe do with a wee bit of a upgrade. Breakfast was very very good and the lady who served us with coffee and toast was very nice. Location of Hotel is good for bus going into town centre. If... more

I get to stay in a lot of hotels because of my job. In twenty-five years I have never stayed in one so bad as the Cairn. Wallpaper hanging off walls. Half the light bulbs not working on the staircase. The noise of loud pop music and stale cigarette smoke seeping into the rooms from the bars and public rooms... more

but the room a tiny single; the finish poor; the walls so thin I could share in my neighbours' nocturnal wanderings; the music in the function room so loud that the floor of my room shook (even though I was on the third floor) and the organisation and communication over breakfast arrangements a shambles. Nothing specifically wrong with the food... more
