We came for lunch on the recommendation of friends and it did not disappoint! We were made to feel really welcome by the friendly staff and were not at all intimidated to ask for our beef to be extremely well done!(unlike some other hotels we have visited) we were also lucky enough with the weather to be able to sit... more

I have just returned from Sunday lunch at the Cottage in the Woods restaurant. A party of eight of us had the set Sunday roast lunch. Three of us had completely raw meat. Two parties at neighbouring tables also had the same experience. They offered recooked meals and then a discount from the bill. The manageress apologised - an apology... more

We are sorry that these guests did not experience the usual high standard that we strive to achieve. We normally cook the Sunday lunch beef medium-rare, but on this occasion, it was rare. This was not to everybody's taste and so we rectified the situation by waiving all costs associated with this dish. Beef is perfectly safe to serve very...

The family that run this place have the knack of balancing friendliness with professionalism. Room cosy and cottagey, as it should be, food far better than the standard, service from young staff was on the informal side, but attentive and efficient. When we mentioned seeing the sign "To the Hills" we were offered the hotel's own map of how to... more

My husband and I did not stay at the hotel - we went for lunch on our 49th wedding anniversary, 3rd September. We have several friends who have frequently remarked that the food there is excellent, so we decided to go for lunch there instead of Corse Lawn, which would normally be our choice. What a mistake. We chose a... more

This Hotel provided a great respite between two business meetings, The location and view are good, but a bit of a walk from anything else. The room was comfy but in an annex about 3-4 mins walk away from check-in. Perhaps not such a big loss, as there was a lack of any "atmosphere" in the lobby and bar area... more

I have stayed at the Cottage in the Wood twice and each time I have left thinking, "Why can't all hotels be like this". It goes significantly beyond the magnificent setting. Given that small children aren't to the taste of all hoteliers, and some don't hide it too well either, we were never made to feel that they or we... more

I must say that I booked this hotel with more than a little trepidation as it was a last minute decision to go and was practially the only place that I could get into. Many of the other recent reviews are not good but I thought that I would make my own judgement. I am glad that I stuck with... more

Traditional pleasant lounge. Good bedroom but poorly serviced in terms of replenishments. Inadequate menu; same every night for 3 nights with limited choice; fish of the day was always salmon which means either unimaginative or lazy. Without doubt going down and poor value for what they charge. more

We have used the hotel and restaurant at The Cottage in the Wood for nearly 25 years. We recently booked two deluxe rooms for several days in August, when we found out we were being charged £40 per room per night more than the web prices we called up and asked for a reduction in our room rate. The reaction... more

According to our records this reviewer last stayed here in April 2005. The decision to refuse the booking was taken by me after much thought and taken in the interests of our other guests and my team. In nearly 22 years running the hotel I have never had to resort to this sort of action. The hotel is family run...

We stayed here and booked the best room. Whilst the room was large, the fittings were cheap. There was no bath robe which for £170+ was a disappointment. The whole thing felt like a travelodge. The food was fine in the restaurant. The sitting area and bar areas were very tired and looked like an old people's home. There's a... more
