"A Hidden treasure....a real find" Irish Times

Not just 'a country house' this is our family home. We are delighted to extend its warmth to all our visitors from Ireland and around the world.

Ballymote delights in continuing the best of that renowned country house tradition, informal and apparently effortless hospitality. We understand just how valuable our guests' free time is with today's hectic way of life.

That's why, from the moment you arrive, we make sure the outside world feels a world away. Ballymote is as restful, or as relaxingly active, as you want it to be. Your only decision will be how you want to enjoy yourself next!

"No where nicer than Ballymote...... Resplendent, elegantly faded charm, blissful beds and great cooking from Nicola are the Ballymote signatures". 100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland Bridgestone Guide.

We pride ourselves on our breakfasts; apart from the de rigeur Ulster fry (ours has sausages made by a local butcher to our family recipe and 8 or so other things on the platter) we offer homemade jams, (3 or 4 different types), local honey, fruit from the garden and masses of other delicious things. It will set you up for a day of exploring!

One of the many extraordinary things about County Down is the extraordinary amount it offers for visitors to do! But never forget that while at Ballymote, simply doing nothing is as good a way to pass your time as any!

We are in the heart of St. Patrick's country; it is an ideal base for exploring one of the most historically and culturally rich parts of Ireland, with wonderful gardens, challenging world renowned links golf courses, spectacular mountains, deserted coastline and unspoilt countryside for walking and horse riding.

Come and experience it ... relax, enjoy, above all make yourself at home!

Ballymote..... Enthusiastically dedicated to your relaxation.

James and Nicola Manningham-Buller

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very warm welcome by the owners. Very comfy bedroom and the very large breakfast was delicious with plenty of bread. Great location for visiting attractions in Co Down and very easy to find as on main road.

Ballymote Country House is full of historical charm and the perfect choice for a relaxing weekend break surrounded by the idyllic countryside of Downpatrick. We stayed in the Curtis suite. The super king size bed was so unbelievably comfortable. James and Nicola were perfect hosts. The breakfast amazing with lots of delicious options. We would highly recommend a stay here!

We had a lovely stay at Ballymote. The rooms were clean, bright and full of character. The bed has to be one of the most comfiest, we’ve ever slept in. The house is beautiful and charming, the hosts are welcoming, full of knowledge, the breakfast was delightful. Our stay from start to finish was perfect. We will be back

This was our first experience of this sort of B&B but if this the norm then we would happily do it again. We stayed for 9 nights - longer than we originally planned but were at the mercy of dog friendly availability on the ferries (the dog being one of the reasons why we chose Ballymote). We would have loved however to stay even longer. The house was lovely and full of interesting pictures and information about the house and the owners family. The grounds were large with plenty of space for our dog to run around in and play with the resident terriers. Had a lot of laughs with James the owner who always had a story to tell and he also arranged extremely good breakfasts - healthy stuff which my wife took a huge liking to - and also a great fry-up which I myself partook of...every day! A lot of the food was home made or locally produced and there was always a freshly made loaf of bread every morning. A great base for exploring the local countryside and attractions. All in all, a very enjoyable stay.

My ten year old daughter and I are just home from the most welcoming two nights stay in Ballymote Country House. We were made to feel like part of the family. Our room and bathroom were perfectly clean, the towels and robes, so soft and fluffy. The bath water was piping hot and there was an interesting and eclectic selection of books to hand for relaxation. We met the owners' three terriers and they got time to befriend our own dog outside together in the garden. This is a quietly elegant home, perfectly located and shared with us by a remarkably down-to-earth family.

Thank you for welcoming in such a friendly manner. The setting, facilities and food were of a very high standard and we felt spoiled! The bed was absolutely wonderful and the breakfast was full of locally sourced delicious food. There were plenty of thoughtful touches such as tea and biscuits on arrival, assistance with restaurant booking and freshly baked bread with breakfast. An amazing stay- we will be recommending to others.

Ballymote House has a wonderful charming atmosphere which is simply down to the hosts, James and Nicola, the way they treated us as guests and the comfort that we experienced not least a big comfortable bed and soft pillows and an appetising breakfast. It is their family home and when you go there, you have a sense of being one of the long lost family. We also thoroughly enjoyed the great conversations with James and Nicola. Even the wonderful family dogs conveyed the sense of welcoming and warmth.
