Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely spot if you want a nice out of the way campsite. We loved the composting toilets. The low ropes course was fantastic. The facilities are basic but that's all we needed. Would definitely return.

If you want to experience backpacking style as you remember it, you cannot go wrong with Marthrown. So much choice in how and where to stay (tipi, yurt, camping, iron age fort, bunkhouses), and what to do while you're there, from the numerous bike trails and walks through the woods to exploring nearby Dumfries. This was the first night of our North Coast road trip and we went for the cheap option of the bunkhouse: we had the place to ourselves. If you want 5 star go elsewhere. If you want to meet others, stay in the middle of a forest or re-live the backpacking experience - this is it. 3.5/5

My son and I stayed on the campsite at Marthrown for a few days at the beginning of August. We'd decided to head to Scotland to do some mountain biking at Mabie, Ae, Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree, and decided that Marthrown would make an ideal base camp. We arrived in glorious sunshine, Pam told us where everything was and let us know she was there if we needed anything. We emptied the car, got the tent up. While we were sorting our stuff out to go for a ride Mike came over to introduce himself and see if we needed anything. We had a very enjoyable stay here, the shower worked well and the toilets did what they're meant to do, and it was certainly preferable to "proper" wild camping with no facilities. The hot tub and sauna was a very welcome relief for our tired legs after a couple of days of hard riding in the Scottish hills. The "challenge course" was great fun, especially after a couple of ciders! The whole place is so peaceful and quiet and it's set in the most beautiful area with fantastic views. The fact that it's so close to the 7Stanes bike trails is a huge bonus. Pam and Mike are lovely people, so warm, friendly and welcoming. We're already planning our next biking trip to Scotland and without a doubt, we'll be staying at Marthrown.

I have been visiting Marthrown for a number of years but, after my last visit, have decided I won't be back. It is sad to see how dirty and unloved the place has become. The bunkhouses are quite simply filthy. The kitchen has not been deep cleaned in years and is full of clutter and the mouldy leftover food of other guests. This makes cooking a meal a much more difficult task than it should be. My friends also found pants belonging to someone else in the bottom of their bed. At £25 a night, there is simply no excuse for this. If Pam and Mike are unable to maintain the property properly themselves, I feel they should use some of their revenue to employ someone who can. It is unacceptable to ask people to stay in these conditions. I see that Marthrown has many positive reviews and I understand why: I too have spent many fun weekends there. It is in a beautiful spot with access to mountain biking trails and nice forest walks. This, however, does not make up for the fact that the accommodation is no longer fit for purpose. I'm sorry to write this review but it is important, for the sake of others wishing to go there, to be honest about what to expect.

Im sure at some point that this was a lovely site but it has been sorely neglected. We stayed in the bunkhouse and having travelled extensively i have stayed in my fair share of basic accomodation. This however took my breath away. It was filthy and cluttered and did not appear to have been cleaned or maintained in many months. The windows were covered in cobwebs and insects, paint was peeling off the walls and the windows leaked onto the beds. The kitchen and living room were dirty and cluttered and full of half empty foodstuffs. I am sure if the owners invested in the place it could be lovely but i would strongly advise you did not stay here.

My partner and I spent five blissful days camping at Marthrown over the Easter break. Ok, we were very lucky with the weather but, that aside, we loved the concept and the whole atmosphere of the place. Despite being ‘off grid’ we had everything we needed by way of kitchen facilities, hot running water and shower, and composting loos with a view! Not to mention the sauna, bucket shower and hot tub... We joined up with friends who were staying in one of the yurts - a really lovely, well equipped alternative for less clement weather. The 7 Stanes mountain bike trail runs right past the site, there are beautiful forest walks, stunning views and you can be on the beautiful Solway Firth coast at Rockcliffe within 30 minutes. Pam and Mike are very welcoming and we were super-impressed with the work and thought that Mike has clearly put into the site. Make no mistake, Marthrown is remote and the rustic concept is probably not for everyone. Even after you have navigated the mile-long fire road, you can’t drive onto the camp site and all your gear has to be transported from the car in wheelbarrows! However, if peace, quiet, solitude and total relaxation are your thing, you will love it. We did, and we will be back.

Marthrwown has a lot to offer at their beautifully located site in the Forrest of Mabie. It may not be the most high end campsite with luxury facilities, but that's not the point. If you like simple, comfortable and eco friendly facilities in secluded, but still accessible place, then its perfect. (Its a few miles up a forestry track 15min from the town.) Pam and Mike are really accommodating, welcoming of groups and parties, and will help with catering. We had a BBQ feast alongside a birthday group! Along with the various glamping options there's a hot tub, sauna, bucket shower, play area, pick-nick tables, recycling points, wood for fires, kitchen facilities, BBQ areas etc. I'll be back soon for sure.
