Travellers' Choice
Situated in the quaint spa town of Moffat which is the beating heart and hub of the beautiful Scottish Lowlands, the Hotel offers fast free Wi-Fi and all the modern conveniences expected of a small Country Hotel that punches way above its weight. Moffat is in a perfect position geographically – only a few minutes from the M74 motorway, 55 miles from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, 21 miles to Dumfries and only 40 miles from Carlisle and the border with England. It has managed to retain a lot of its Auld World charm retaining its rich heritage. Moffat is the epicentre of a beautiful quiet, unexplored region surrounded by rolling hills, valleys, lochs, and wide open spaces with magnificent scenery. Every room is en suite (with one small –by choice-exception) and all enjoy a flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and USB charging ports. A multi-purpose TV Lounge/Ops Room/Meeting Room is available along with excellent map and route planning assistance facilities and experienced advice. Quality food, both comfort and sometimes quirky, but definitely with our very own stamp and assured quality is available whilst the breakfasts are truly exceptional. The Hotel is simply brilliantly positioned, not only as a stopover from North to South and vice versa, but as the perfect base to spend a few days in the area to explore this amazing and beautiful part of Scotland. This Hotel offers huge resources and knowledge in Motorcycle Tourism, Walking Routes, Cycling, Eagle Trails and Star Gazing. The Hotel is simply passionate about making your stay enjoyable.

We booked a last minute night away with our teenager. On arrival we received a warm friendly welcome from the lovely owners. Our room had everything we needed (we booked the triple). We made our way to the bar and had a couple of local gins and beers and played some cards. The bar is cosy and relaxing. We had booked a local restaurant but actually wished we had eaten in the hotel itself as the food looked lovely (we will be back and do that next time). Breakfast was super organised and again lovely. Our teenager had pancakes with bacon and Darren had crumpets with poached eggs. Thanks for your lovely hospitality and we will definitely be back!

5 stars really isn't enough for this place! I’ve never been so well looked after; the family running the hotel are extremely kind and friendly and were always happy to go the extra mile to make sure I was happy and comfortable, not only during my stay, but with preparing for my expedition as well! I would 10000% recommend this place to anyone! Also the food is incredible!

Excellent service from all at hotel, owners and staff. Rooms clean and comfortable. Courtesy bar a bonus while existing closed. during short season. Breakfast spot on. Been twice now, would recommend. Owner and his daughter were very helpful when we had issues at seperate eaterie in Moffat which escalated out of control.

Being elderly and disabled some hotels can pose problems. Not the Buccleuch. The owner Dave Smith and his family could not be any more welcoming friendly and helpful. The room was as spotless as the rest of the hotel and the food in the restaurant is simply awesome. The hotel is a historic listed building so there are stairs, but we managed. Already booked for 2 more stays this year.

I can’t rate this place highly enough. It really is my favourite hotel, especially being a biker myself. I’ve been here twice in 6 months, although we only had drinks last time but stayed 2 nights this time. I do know I’ll definitely be back again ASAP. On meeting Dave again the 2nd time, you’d think he was my mate of 40 years that had last met only a couple of weeks ago. What a lovely fella. And after 2 days, and meeting some of his family, that goes for them too. They really are special people. It was out of season this time, bed and breakfast only, (November to March), but he suggested plenty of great eating places, all types of cuisine to please everyone’s taste buds. Traditional Scottish hearty grub, to Chippy, Indians, Italians and Chinese to name but a few and all within 80 yds of their front door. They were keen to tell us about the surrounding area, and even planned a route for us to check out with numerous different beautiful locations and attractions, including where we’d be likely to see golden eagles and again, boy, was he right. Amazing sights that I could have sat and watched all day. The hotel was immaculately clean, all the usual facilities in the double room, including the all important very comfortable bed and lovely sparkling, modern, spacious en-suite with large sink, toilet and walk in shower cubicle. The breakfast’s, which were expertly and cheerfully cooked by Lara, I had a full Buccleuch Scottish breakfast both days, set me up for the day, both times, and listen to this. On the breakfast request form, which you fill in the evening before, there was the ‘MAGIC BOX’ as Dave explained, “You can put anything you like in that box, if there’s a specific way you like anything cooked, lightly done, well done, or crispy bacon for instance, put it in there. Your a growing lad, you might want extra slices, or an extra sausage, stick it in there and we’ll sort it out. If there’s anything you don’t see, or isn’t on our (very extensive) list, put it down and we’ll try and source it. That’s why it’s called a magic box.” I tried it, well done bacon and 1 extra slice. Wow, it worked. I’ve never seen that before but what an amazing touch. Now that’s service and hospitality for you. After telling us the good establishment’s to eat our evening meal, he also suggested a few bars for a drink, adding, and showing us the very well stocked honesty bar in the residents sitting room, that you could come back to once the local pubs had shut in case you hadn’t already consumed enough. 🍺🍺Which incidentally we hadn’t, both nights. Like he said, I’m a growing lad. 🤣 where also, if we’d preferred we could also have taken back a takeaway, to eat in, with all plates, dishes, cutlery, condiments etc at hand, including a trolley close by to leave any dirty dishes on for them to wash up at their earliest opportunity, and a sealed bin for the wrappers and/or boxes. And it was, when you’re done, just write on one of those chits what you’ve had, there’s the pencils, and leave it in the basket and we’ll add it to your bill. Then, “On your way out, flick those two switches to knock the lights out.”They even had, which I’ve never, ever seen before, or even crossed my mind, a little wire hook, in the centre of all the condiment trays, with a tiny pair of scissors hanging to cut the corners off the often very fiddly condiments sachets. Absolute genius. There was absolutely nothing that these awesome people haven’t thought about. I could sit here and write double this as a review, I rarely bother unless it’s well deserved, but if I shout too much, singing their praises, and too many people go off this review, there might not be a vacancy for me the next time I want to stay.

Our second visit. The MOST friendly welcome we receive anywhere. Good rooms, excellent bar, nice food, lovely service and fabulous people. We love this place and although we just tend to use it for short stays - breaking a far longer journey to the far north of Scotland (or back), we always find it the perfect stopover. You're made to feel so welcome, you cannot help but relax completely. Highly recommended. And we're not even bikers!

Fantastic. Eight friends descended on the hotel on motorbikes and immediately found that nothing is too much trouble for the owners and staff. Secure parking at the rear of the hotel put our minds at rest and let us concentrate on enjoying our stay. The rooms are basic but clean and comfy with good showers. The bar sells drinks at a reasonable price (especially good for a hotel) with plenty of choice of beers, spirits and of course, malts. We enjoyed a couple of beers then were called through to the very spacious and comfy dining room. The hotel likes meals to be pre-ordered but only by an hour or so. The food was extremely good. I’m not usually a burger man but was glad I chose the beef, bacon and haggis burger…very tasty. Breakfast again was very good. Not your normal run of the mill choices either, haddock and poached eggs, salmon, full Scottish and many more. The staff were very friendly and helpful too. Overall, recommended.
