University residence with private rooms and shared bathrooms. Everything was very clean and noise was minimal. Great value, less than half the price of a normal hotel, and even a good breakfast was included. Location was a bit far from the center of Edinburgh, about a 25-30 minute walk to the train station, but it's in a very quiet area.... more

I stayed here for a couple of nights during the Festival in August 2009. The other reviews are pretty accurate regarding the rooms and amenities. As noted, they are currently doing a lot of renovation, but it seems to be going quickly, so I imagine it will be completed by the end of summer. It was fully booked, but I... more

Well, it may be called 'Edinburgh First' but it is actually the Pollock Halls - as anyone will tell you, these are the biggest and best of Edinburgh University's halls of residence. But they are not stupid and the halls are built to accommodate people like us on holiday as well as people like my nephew who is a student... more

Spent a weekend here with a group of guys and it was ideal for our requirements. About 5 minutes by taxi from the train station. Rooms are basic but have en-suite and tv. Our room had two single beds and was clean and functional. Also 24 hour reception if you are out late. Breakfast was particularly good for the price.... more

Some people here told us not to believe the webpage of Edinburgh First. Yet what I saw and where I stayed matched perfectly with what they promote! Lovely view of Hollyrood Park which I could enjoy the magic hour on the bed; fast wifi at reasonable $ which I could use at Pantry (I believe this can also be used... more

We knew going in that it was going to be a dorm type setting, so we weren't expecting very much but it's hard to write any sort of glowing review because they were renovating everywhere! The dining hall (which did very well for buffet style breakfast, just hard to find seats), the phones, the sidewalks, the pantries (the dorm lounges).... more

I stayed one night in Holland House recently and found it to be a mixed experience... The good: - Excellent value for money - £40 for an en-suite room with breakfast. Single travellers are often forced to pay almost as much as couples for a room, so this was great value. - The breakfast: an excellent choice of food -... more

This hotel is a great base for visiting Edinburgh. We came by motorbike and it is a very safe place to leave a vehicle as it has a manned entrance and plenty of parking space. The room was spacious and very clean with a good hospitality tray, hairdryer and tv. The breakfast is served in a separate building, directly opposite,... more

Basic (and a bit run down) rooms, but clean. The rooms are part of a large complex in the university. Staff are very friendly. Didn't get a chance to sample the breakfast. Not a very central location, and takes abt 15-20 minutes to the Royal Mile area by bus. Overall recommendation would be to look for something more central if... more

Don't go there! Edinburgh First's website leads you to believe that you will be staying in their conference facilities. You actually get to stay in halls of residence which are VERY basic. We paid just under 90GBP a night for a room and it wasn't worth it at all. The first room we were given was terrible - it was... more
