Firstly I can't imagine where the person who left the first review of this place stayed, because it certainly wasnt the same guest house that I visited!

Bells Guest House is wonderful, warm and friendly, with great rooms and delicious food. We stayed there for 2 nights, and wished we could've stayed longer. The landlady gave us a very warm welcome, offered directions to a couple of nearby pubs for dinner and told us where the nearest cash point was. Unfortunately I was unwell when we arrived there, but Christine and Molly (the landlady and housekeeper) took care of me like mums, cooked a special breakfast that I would like, and even provided me with strepsils and lemsips!

The room was so comfy (I can vouch for that .... owing to being ill I spent most of the 2 days there in bed), the decor delightful, and everything you could want provided.

I would recommend this place to anyone, not for a city centre pad, but for a comfy, friendly home from home :)

The good: relatively low price, comfortable bed.

The bad: a) tiny bathroom with no room to turn around, b) the place smelled of cat urine, c) poor location, recquiring a 20-minute bus ride into downtown Edinburgh, contrary to the "near town'" suggestion on the Web site, d) when we informed the owner that we only had face towels and not bath towels, she seemed put out and grudgingly gave us a set of bath towels, e) when we informed her the second day that our used towels had not been replaced, she demanded to see the towels before giving us fresh ones, rather than gracefully and simply giving us the towels with no questions, f) when going into the dining room after breakfast to fetch a banana from a fruit bowl to take in to town, the owner followed us into the room and wanted to know what we wanted. This was really a turn-off.

For a minimum-stress vacation, I would not recommend this B&B.
