Your experience probably differs a lot depending on which of the many blocks you get booked into. I was in Chancellors Hall where the rooms (all en suite) are grouped into flats (six rooms to a flat) - as well as the rooms every flat has a tv lounge and kitchen area with two ovens, two fridges, a microwave and tea and coffee making facilities. If the flats aren't fully occupied you almost get these facilities to yourself which makes it a more pleasant experience than it might be.
Impressive view out of the window (my room was on the fifth floor) too - the only good thing about it being so high up a hill.
nb another block called Murray Hall seems to be the more traditional sort of student hall with lots of rooms along a corridor and far fewer facilities to go round (eg only a couple of tv lounges for the whole block). Don't know anything about any of the other blocks on site though.
