An absolute gem of a place just along the road from Thurso. We don't typically need an overnight stop in Caithness, but due to current ferry timetables, thought it was best on this occasion, and very fortunate we found Forss House. A beautiful country house, with riverside walks, this was ideal as we had our dog. Sometimes a lot of hotels are 'dog friendly' as a marketing tool, but FH go above and beyond with welcoming dogs. We had one of the fishing lodges (Falls I think), which was perfect because it was ground floor, with it's own door, and has a little vestibule which is perfect for housing our four-legged friend. Breakfast was superb in the morning, cooked to order with high quality ingredients. Sad that we were only staying overnight - will definitely stay longer next time to enjoy the simply wonderful Forss House and its grounds!…

We stayed here one night and then catching the ferry next morning to Orkney. Beautiful place, nicely decorated.Bar area was small but lovely. We had the tasting menu which was amuse bouche and 7 courses.Every course was really tasty and service was good. Room was clean and very spacious. We had a big copper bath in our massive bathroom! Breakfast was very well cooked and massive, I couldn’t even finish it all. Well recommended if going to catch the ferry early in the morning.

Spent two nights at this lovely hotel and had a brilliant time. The staff were fantastic and looked after us very well. We were given an upgrade which was just an extra bonus. There were beautiful walks around the hotel and nearby with waterfalls just outside. Only comment to make was that dinner was a three course event which was just a bit too much for us midweek. It would have been lovely to maybe have a bar meal option in the breakfast room.

Just back from a Friday to Monday long weekend with my wife and our old dog - and it was gorgeous. The food was of a high standard, and the wines and whiskies were impressive, though I personally enjoyed the Orkney Gold beer. Treats for doggie and a generous hospitality tray in our room which was large, warm, with a large en suite bathroom and a large utility entrance lobby - perfect for returning from wet walks with a doggie who has enjoyed himself, made it perfect for a relaxed stay. The young manager was a huge asset - a wonderful combination of hospitality and "on the ball" - and the staff were attentive and prompt if you needed them. The house dates from early 1800s with many original, or facsimile, pieces, tastefully decorated and warmly curtained and carpeted: a step back into the C19th - the Scottish season house of an adventurous Dorsetshire, aristocratic, army family - but with modern warmth and convenience. The grounds allowed us to step out onto a river or woodland walk before breakfast - natural surroundings with well-lit connecting paths around main house and the "cottage rooms". So far they have preserved the best without spoiling the essential character of the place. We loved it - we shall very likely go again. Alan Bartlam…

We stayed for 3 nights in October 2023 whilst driving the NC500 and we stayed in the Morven room. There is everything to like about this hotel and nothing to dislike. Check in was easy, and we felt comfortable and relaxed from the start. The staff are all polite, kind and courteous and they go out of their way to ensure you have what you need. We had drinks in the bar and dinner one night in the restaurant, the food was fantastic, well presented and good service from the staff. Would recommend this hotel, it has a lot of charm, fantastic location, we walked along the river down to the beach and would certainly stay again. Thank you to all the staff and please pass on our best wishes. Karen and Alex

We stayed in the Mill House which we shared with friends. It’s an old and original building, lovely waterfall outside the windows, very special indeed. The main part of the hotel is stylish and comfortable. Lovely bar, full or interesting whiskey and cocktails. But the dining experience is really excellent with some of the best food we’ve experienced in Europe. Great service and friendly staff. The mill house needs some work on the plumbing tho. Air in the pipes and taps which were jammed and unusable.lighting was very dim. Great beds and top linen. We would definitely recommend Forss House Hotel

Being on your honeymoon and finding yourself in a nightmare... the room received for our stay did not correspond to what was indicated on Booking.com Ours was a Garden View King Room, and we were assigned the Hairy Mary. In particular: - the room did not have a double bed, but rather two paired single beds - the bathroom is not like the one shown in the photo, and here I want to make a clarification: in the presentation photos of the king room on Booking there is only a side photo of the shower, there is no entire photo of the bathroom. But, given that all the other photos of the structure show the presence of renovated bathrooms, with very luxurious metal bath tub, it was more than legitimate to assume that there would be the same design. With a smaller size perhaps, but certainly not what we ended up with. An old, ruined bathroom, with an outdated tub and absolutely not renovated Overall, I'm sorry to note that the room, despite having a high cost (€623 for 2 nights) was absolutely not up to what was promised. Furthermore, when faced with our request for a refund via booking, the structure refused any compensation, even in front of the photos. Uncommentable.…

This was the third night of our NC500 road trip. After the disappointing experience of the previous night in Dornoch we were hoping for an improvement and it certainly was! Beautiful building in woodland with all the latest facilities - Someone has spent the cash here without doubt! The staff were very helpful and check-in smooth and uncomplicated. Our room was on the ground floor near to the bar and restaurant - a blessing as we had heavy cases!! What a huge room with a downstairs bathroom which had a huge chrome bath and walk-in shower. We spent some time in the bar for pre-dinner drinks and sampled some of the many whiskies available and then into dinner. Excellent food, excellent service and reasonably priced (not cheap but VFM). We slept well in the super comfy bed and ate a hearty breakfast before departing to the next location. It was a pretty-much faultless experience and highly recommended. We would most certainly return. …

We were able to get a last minute booking on our NC500 trip with Forss House Hotel and we feel so incredibly lucky!! We are staying in the Fisherman’s Cottages which are warm, quiet, cosy and beautifully appointed. We also treated ourselves to a meal in their restaurant which we would highly recommend with amazing food and warm friendly staff. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
