Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We reserved two nights at the Nevis Bank Inn. The first night the bed smelled horrible like the worst body odor you can imagine combined with someone being ill. My husband, myself and our baby were sharing the bed. Our seven-year-old son was sleeping on the couch made into a bed. My husband went down to the front desk and asked for a different room or at least a clean bed because we simply could not sleep on the bed. I nearly threw up because of the smell and our baby should not have been subjected to the horrible and unclean conditions. The smell was like someone’s horrible body odor during an illness. When my husband went down on the first night, he was told at the front desk that they had no other rooms for us and that we would have to talk to the manager in the morning. We were not offered fresh linens or even extra blankets. Because of the unacceptable smell we had to sleep on top of our blankets and we nearly froze as the thermostat was not working. We could not turn on the heat and I was quite chilled during the night. The next morning we did talk with the manager who told us they would look into it while we were out that day. We were not offered sympathy or any sort of compensation for the miserable night we spent. When we returned for the second night, we were told that they changed the mattress cover in addition to the sheets. According to what we were told they do not change the mattress cover after every guest stays. Gross. Despite the fact that we had small children and moving to another room or accommodation would have been a challenge, we would have been willing to move rooms or would have moved to a different hotel. However, we were told there were no other rooms available at Nevis Bank Inn and when we called other hotels, we were told they were full. We were forced to stay another night in unsanitary conditions. We had requested a new mattress but they refused to change the mattress. The bed still smelled but not nearly as much as the first night because they had changed the sheets and the mattress protector. This is clearly an issue with the accommodation and the training of the staff. They should have taken care of us the first night when the issue was reported. We have complained but they have fought us and say we are lying about the issues we had. I feel that others deserve to know truth about Nevis Bank Inn prior to booking a room.

Response from Derek Claase, Owner at Nevis Bank Inn
Responded 11 Nov 2023
Tripadvisor, Google, etc were set up to help traveler’s decide where to stay or where to eat when travelling. They also help businesses to see where they are doing well or where they have to improve. This only works if people put genuine reviews on these sites. You stayed with us in one of our suites, these rooms have a king size bed in the bedroom and a king size sofa bed in the lounge. You complained that there was a smell from our washing powder.. our general manager and housekeeper couldn’t find anything wrong with the bedding but were more than happy to change it for you. You stayed for the whole weekend and were happy on check out. On returning home you tried to claim the weekend through your credit card company, when you failed this review appeared. Can we please get back to using these sites for what they were set up for. Genuine reviews.

My husband and I stayed here at the start of our Great Glen Way hike. We were very impressed with the hotel. It was clean, modern and nicely decorated, with lots of attention to detail. The food at Browns Restaurant, which is part of the hotel, was fantastic!

Great little hotel in the highlands! It’s nothing fancy, but it’s comfy and cozy. The restaurant was great for breakfast. I really liked the choices in the morning, but the dinner was just okay. My room was cozy and the mattress was comfortable. The bathroom was nice and large and i loved the big bottles of shampoo and body wash. There’s of course stairs, like many smaller hotels I’m the area.

Quiet, cosy and excellent room with good sized bathroom. All was extremely clean and well appointed. Service was first rate and the food in Browns Restaurant was first rate for Breakfast while the Dinner menu was broad with each dish we tried was perfectly presented and tasty using the best ingredients.

Reading previous reviews we had high hopes for our stay. Instead we felt it was a functional place more set up for large parties. The room was large and clean but dated. The main area of unhappiness was the food that let it down. For example, over-cooked poached eggs and other things showed no attention to detail. We wouldn't stay there again especially given the price.

This hotel is a gem in Fort William. The first thing we noticed the instant we walked in was the cleanliness of the place. Our room followed the same pattern in the cleanliness, beds were very comfortable and bathroom came with all amenities. Location is great should you wish to take the Jacobite train to Mallaig. Breakfast is included in the price of the room. We were very pleased and surprised by the quality and variety offered. Breakfast was outstanding. This is five star place. I definitely recommend this place if you’re going to Fort William.

So I am giving this a 4* rating purely for the fact we needed a room and they had one. Reception is smart and the staff were attentive. Wonderful location. 10 min walk into town. Room was sufficient. Comfy bed. Shower...now that's not worthy of a good review. Poor pressure and lucky if it got above tepid. Manager said he would address immediately. Even based on this review I would definitely stay again.

Nice hotel . Lovely comfortable rooms ,beds to die for .Nice resturant area Food very expensive thought . Has a small lounge area atbresurant but its not really a bar ,more somewhere u have a drink after your meal . If your looking for a few bars its a good 25 min walk into town. Would be on the outskirts of the town in location

Very nice hotel. Wouldn't rate it for the view (our room looked out onto a brick wall and it's on a main road) but it's a pleasant, friendly hotel. Big shout-out for the lovely cheery lady serving breakfast who raised a smile from our teenager (no mean feat first thing in the morning) by asking him if he wanted daddy bear, mummy bear, or baby bear sized porridge!

Shame about the bed……… because everything else was very clean. Bedroom: The bed hadn’t been made properly. First thing a guest sees on arrival. Shame really, because cleanliness etc otherwise was very good. But the state of the bed meant that I started looking for other things that were amiss. But on the positive side, even going into great depth, I didn’t find very much. The room was very quiet, with no outside noise or noise from guests. Welcome pack very informative, the laminate was a nice touch. Tea tray had a very good selection. (I thought the wee note was funny… ”please only use kettle for boiling water in”) and wonder what other guests are boiling 😂 Bathroom: Shower spotless, all chrome fixtures were polished to a high shine. Lovely toiletries, they smell lovely. Nice fluffy towels beautifully arranged. General: Dust on light fixtures and bedside cabinets, particularly on the bottom and corners. Same with wardrobe. Spiders / cobwebs on ceiling, behind the bed had a thick layer of dust. Not been hoovered behind for a long time. We used to do this weekly in the hotels I worked in. This is me being really particular, but it was the bed that did it! Nicely made bed makes all the difference. I would just add one thing: the towel rail was really, really hot. Perhaps this could be turned off / on lower temperature to save energy, cut running costs and help towards caring for the planet. Breakfast: Lovely staff at breakfast, attentive and friendly. Food was very quick arriving to my table, which I appreciated as I had booked a taxi to work. I very much enjoyed the cooked breakfast, there was a generous amount and the choice of cereals etc was very good. They also cater for gluten intolerant, as I was given gluten free toast. Had a lovely stay here. The hotel has been recently modernised, the decor is very tasteful and decorated to a very high standard. Looks like the carpets are brand new also. The only thing missing is a lift, which I feel the hotel would benefit from with having an additional floor. I met the manager, David, during my stay. Had a nice conversation with him. What a lovely, genuinely nice guy. He very kindly booked my taxi for me, because my usual company were fully booked. I would definitely stay again!
